Gomes explains why he signed for Everton amid Spurs links

Andre Gomes has admitted he is “feeling important” again at Everton.

The Portuguese midfielder joined the Toffees on loan from Barcelona at the start of the season and although he missed the beginning of the campaign through injury, he has become something of a revelation in Marco Silva’s side.

Gomes re-ignites the spark at Goodison: five key things to know…

  1. After breaking into the Benfica side in 2012, Gomes moved to Valencia in 2014 first on loan, then permanently.
  2. The Portuguese spent two years at the Mestalla, making 78 appearances in all competitions.
  3. After winning Euro 2016 with Portugal, Gomes made a €35m move to Barcelona, but struggled to break into the first team at the Nou Camp.
  4. He joined Everton on loan in the summer, finally making his debut in October, starring in a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.
  5. Gomes has put in another seven high-quality outings since then and admits the fans are making him “feel important” again.

The Telegraph claims Tottenham could move for Gomes next summer if he opts against moving to Merseyside permanently, but the midfielder has already become a firm fan favourite at Everton, making eight appearances so far.

“It is really important when you get good feedback from the supporters, you feel important and it is a good thing personally,” Gomes told Everton TV.

“I am one hundred per cent sure [I can enjoy my football at Everton]. That is why I signed for the club. I saw it as a really big opportunity to play for a big club in the Premier League. All the little details were important.

“I arrived injured but still received huge support from the people and I am enjoying every day as an Evertonian.

“It wasn’t a big injury but it happened during pre-season [in a friendly match for Barcelona] and it is never easy when you start with an injury.

“I appreciated all the messages from the fans and my first days in the club with my teammates were important – talking with them and getting to know them – that time made me feel more comfortable at the club and in my rehab.”

Gomes thriving off Everton’s attacking options

In Everton’s 2-2 draw against Watford on Monday, no player had more touches of the ball than Gomes (87), while 28 of his 66 passes were accurately played into the Watford half.

Gomes is certainly well involved in Everton’s play and is proving pivotal in transitioning Marco Silva’s side from defence to attack.

The 25-year-old, however, is giving most of the credit to Everton’s attacking players, including Richarlison, Bernard, Theo Walcott and Gylfi Sigurdsson.

“Our work is easier when we have forwards like them; we are in good shape and have a good balance,” Gomes added.

“We have a lot of competition in midfield and it is a hard decision for the manager. We have talent and players with the ability to solve any problems in a game. The high expectations [at Everton] are normal.

“I am feeling really comfortable here. We are like a family and it is a huge pleasure and honour to be here and playing for this badge.”

Everton are currently seventh in the Premier League, just two points behind Manchester United. The Toffees travel to Manchester City in their next game on Saturday.
