Spurs defender unsurprised by Pochettino links to a Premier League rival

Mauricio Pochettino being linked to Manchester United and Real Madrid shows how good of a manager he is, according to Danny Rose.

Pochettino is currently in charge of Tottenham Hotspur and has seen the club grow from top six contenders to regular top four finishers.

Does Pochettino deserve to be linked with Man Utd and Real Madrid? Five key things to know…

  1. Pochettino took charge of Tottenham in 2014 and has helped the club evolve after years of mediocrity.
  2. The Argentine is widely regarded as one of the best young managers in the world.
  3. As a result, he has been linked with bigger moves to Manchester United and Real Madrid in the past, with speculation looming over those roles.
  4. And Tottenham left-back Rose believes Pochettino deserves the links, for the work he has done in north London.
  5. Only Manchester City (111) have won more Premier League games than Tottenham (99) since Mauricio Pochettino took charge in 2014.

Spurs confirmed their spot in the last-16 of the Champions League in midweek, drawing with Barcelona in the Nou Camp to finish second in their group.

The north London side had looked to be on the brink of going out of the competition, needing two positive results in their final two matches against Inter Milan and Barca.

Spurs managed to achieve the feat, and Rose believes manager Pochettino deserves all the links he is currently subject to.

“It speaks volumes of how good he is,” he said, as reported by Goal.

“It’s no coincidence every day you read Real Madrid want him or United want him. It’s exactly what he deserves.

“What he has done here in the last four or five years has been amazing. Not only for myself but the club.

“He has transformed how others think of us outside the club and he has transformed how we think of ourselves and how we approach big games.

“It’s no secret all the teams have spent a lot more than what we have. The belief he gives everybody is just amazing.”

As well as qualifying for the last-16 of the Champions League, Spurs are also third in the Premier League after 16 games, six points behind leaders Liverpool.

How Pochettino helped Tottenham evolve

In the final season before Pochettino took over at White Hart Lane, Tottenham finished sixth in the Premier League, with just one point against the teams to finish in the top four – a 1-1 draw with Chelsea.

Pochettino joined in the summer of 2014 and instantly saw Tottenham move a place up in the league to fifth, just six points behind Manchester United in fourth. Spurs also enjoyed two wins against teams to finish in the top four including a 5-3 win over eventual champions Chelsea.

Then Tottenham started to show characteristics of the top four team they are today, finishing third in 2015/16 – though some still mock the north London club for failing to win the league.

A second-placed finish came the following year with only Chelsea better than Tottenham, who boasted the best defence in the league for the second year running, as well as the fewest defeats.

And last season, Spurs finished third again, behind only Manchester City and Manchester United, even managing a 3-1 win over eventual champions Real Madrid in the Champions League.
