How Marco Silva reacted to Jose Mourinho's Everton comments

Everton manager Marco Silva has brushed off Jose Mourinho’s claim that Manchester United will finish above the Toffees this season.

Mourinho recently assured his fans that United would not finish the Premier League campaign below the Merseyside club despite currently sitting two places adrift.

The Red Devils played out a 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Wednesday, while Everton failed to capitalise on gaining further ground as they were held to a 1-1 stalemate with Newcastle.

Everton currently sit level on points with United, as well as Bournemouth who are sixth, but Silva was quick to play down his compatriot’s end of season prediction.

Silva, according to the Daily Mail, told reporters on Thursday: “It is his prediction, nothing more. He knows what is his obligation, and what is the obligation?

“Top six. He knows, and let’s see at the end of the season if his prediction is right or not.”

The Toffees have scored just two goals in their previous four matches, firing blanks against both Chelsea and Liverpool, while their 19 shots against the Magpies resulted in just the single goal.

Cenk Tosun has started six matches this term and found the back of the net just twice, with his last coming against Crystal Palace in October, but Silva insists he is content with his current stock, though he did admit he was doing his “homework” with the January window fast approaching.

He added: “How many clubs are trying to find one striker to score more than 20 goals, or 25 goals, or 30 goals? I think it’s a question at the moment for all the managers in the Premier League.

“I am happy with the players we have. Of course, we are doing our homework. We know what we want to do as well.

“My job is to work with the players we have at the moment, to develop them and develop our squad.”

Silva relishing Watford return

Silva will be facing his former club Watford on Monday night for the first time since being shown the exit door in January.

The Hornets relieved the Portuguese tactician of his managerial duties following a poor run of results, but the club hierarchy later revealed that Silva’s dismissal was influenced by an alleged tapping up from Everton.

The Toffees had just sacked Ronald Koeman in November of last year and subsequently approached Silva about the possibility of taking the reins at Goodison Park, though he had only joined the books at Vicarage Road three months prior.

Watford accused Everton of disrupting their season and ultimately lodged a complaint against the club, but Silva insists he is looking forward to locking horns next week.

“It is not the first time in my life and for sure it will not be the last,” he said.

“I look forward to the match, a tough match for sure, and it will be good to see some of the players who worked with me, some good friends as well I have in the club.”
