Leeds winger failing to impress but Man City's tackle-mad loanee could be the ideal Fernandinho understudy

With their ever-growing network 0f sister clubs and scouting networks, Manchester City have caught up to Chelsea in the sheer amount of players they have on loan at the moment.

It is now commonplace to see rafts of players being shipped out by the Citizens, sending them to all corners of the globe to try and hone their craft, increase their value and maybe even put themselves in a position to break into Pep Guardiola’s side.

This season, the reigning Premier League champions have no fewer than 27 players farmed out and here at Squawka, we’ve taken a look at each and every one of them, ranking them by the success they’ve had so far this term.

27. Charlie Oliver

Club: Brentford

Position: Centre-back

Age: 21

League appearances: 0

21-year-old Charlie Oliver moved to Brentford on loan over the summer in the hope of getting some competitive first-team football. Instead, the defender has spent his time languishing in the Bees’ reserve team and is yet to make a senior appearance.

26. Daniel Arzani

Club: Celtic

Position: Left-winger

Age: 19

League appearances: 1

Daniel Arzani’s loan move to Celtic turned a few heads in the summer, given that the 19-year-old winger has already been capped by the Australian senior team. His Glasgow move hasn’t gone well, however, with injury restricting him to just 33 minutes so far.

25. Edward Francis

Club: Almere City FC

Position: Centre-back

Age: 19

League appearances: 2

19-year-old Edward Francis has only made two first-team appearances for Almere City this season, playing most of his football with their U21 side in the Dutch third tier.

24. Collins Tanor

Club: Hobro IK

Position: Centre-midfield

Age: 20

League appearances: 2

Tanor’s loan club, Hobro IK are bottom of the Danish Superliga after 20 games and Tanor has done absolutely nothing to contribute for better or worse, making just two appearances without registering a single goal or assist.

23. Anthony Caceres

Club: Melbourne City

Position: Centre-midfield

Age: 26

League appearances: 5

26-year-0ld Caceres has made seven appearances for Man City’s sister club, Melbourne City, so far this season, helping the club to fourth in the A League table. The midfielder is yet to contribute a goal or assist in that time, though.

22. Uriel Antuna

Club: FC Groningen

Position: Right-wing

Age: 21

League Appearances: 8

FC Groningen are really struggling in the Eredivisie this season, sitting third-from-bottom with just 14 points from 16 games. Uriel Antuna has done little to help their cause, with no goals or assists in his 11 appearances this term.

21. Thomas Agyepong

Club: Hibernian FC

Position: Left-wing

Age: 22

League appearances: 6

Thomas Agypong has only managed six appearances in all competitions for Hibs so far this season, scoring a single goal along the way. Missed five games earlier in the season with a knee injury.

20. Erik Palmer-Brown

Club: NAC Breda

Position: Centre-back

Age: 21

League appearances: 6

NAC Breda are second-from-bottom in the Dutch Eredivisie this season, with their defence leaking 36 goals in 16 games – the second-highest in the division. USA international Erik Palmer-Brown has, unfortunately, been a part of that brittle back line, winning just one of the six league games in which he has appeared.

19. Patrick Roberts

Club: Girona

Position: Right-wing

Age: 21

League appearances: 10

Roberts is currently out with a hamstring injury, but with no goals and just one assist in his 12 games so far, he’s hardly been as effective as we know he can be. The 21-year-old probably wishes he was back causing havoc in Scotland with Celtic.

18. Jack Harrison

Club: Leeds United

Position: Right-wing

Age: 22

League appearances: 13

With 14 goals in 55 MLS appearances at the start of his career, Jack Harrison had much promise during his time with New York City FC.

It hasn’t quite gone to plan for the youngster and he’s only managed one goal during his 15 appearances at Leeds this season. If he can soak up everything Marcelo Bielsa has to teach, though, he may just come away from his time in Yorkshire a much better player.

17. Aaron Nemane

Club: AFC Tubize

Position: Right-wing

Age: 21

League appearances: 13

Aaron Nemane has provided two assists from his 14 AFC Tubize appearances so far this season, with the club sitting eight in the Belgian second tier.

16. Mix Diskerud

Club: Ulsan Hyundai FC

Position: Centre-midfield

Age: 28

Appearances: 17

At 28-years-old, it’s safe to say that we probably won’t be seeing Mix Diskerud (fantastic name) breaking into the Manchester City first team any time soon. The 38-time USA international has made 17 appearances for Ulsan Hyundai FC in South Korea this season, scoring twice.

15. Douglas Luiz

Club: Girona

Position: Centre-midfield

Age: 20

League appearances: 9

After Pep Guardiola was left baffled by the need to loan Luiz because of work permit issues, the Brazil U20 international has helped Girona to 10th in La Liga so far this season. Although yet to be directly involved in a goal, the 20-year-old does have the fourth-highest pass completion rate (85.2%) of any Girona play in La Liga this season, though.

14. Paolo Fernandes

Club: NAC Breda

Position: Attacking-midfield

Age: 20

League appearances: 6

Another of City’s loanees sent out to NAC Breda, Paolo Fernandes has managed eight outings for the club so far, with the Spaniard providing one goal and two assists. His six Eredivisie outings have only amounted to 280 minutes on the pitch, though.

13. Luke Brattan

Club: Melbourne City FC

Position: Central-midfield

Age: 28

League appearances: 7

Another 28-year-old who is highly unlikely to be turning out at the Etihad in the near future, Luke Brattan has been very effective in the Australian A-League this season, scoring twice and providing an assist in seven league appearances. Brattan has 10 appearances for Melbourne City overall this term.

12. Ernest Agyiri

Club: AFC Tubize

Position: Centre-midfield

Age: 20

League appearances: 8

Ernest Agyiri has had much more success at AFC Tubize than Aaron Nemane, bagging himself three goals in nine games so far, also providing an assist to boot.

11. Luka Ilic

Club: NAC Breda

Position: Attacking-midfield

Age: 19

League appearances: 10

Two goals and two assists in 10 Eredivisie appearances have seen Luka Ilic become a very important member of NAC Breda’s squad. At just 19 years of age, Ilic is showing all the signs of becoming a very good attacking midfielder and is already a Serbian U21 international.

10. Marlos Moreno

Club: Flamengo

Position: Left-wing

Age: 22

League appearances: 21

Although he was, admittedly, only a squad member, Marlos Moreno scored one goal and provided two assists for Flamengo, helping the club to second in the Brazilian Serie A table this season alongside new AC Milan signing Lucas Paqueta.

9. Brandon Barker

Club: Preston North End

Position: Left-wing

Age: 22

League Appearances: 12

Brandon Barker will probably feel a twinge of jealousy having to watch Phil Foden become everything he wanted to be at Manchester City. The 22-year-old, however, has been in good form for Preston North End this season, scoring two goals and assisting another, outperforming the more highly-rated Patrick Roberts in that regard.

8. Aleix Garcia

Club: Girona

Position: Holding midfield

Age: 21

League appearances: 14

Spain U21 international Aleix Garcia was one of the hottest prospects at Manchester City as little as 18-months ago, but has fallen out of Pep Guardiola’s view a little recently.

Garcia is playing his part in Girona’s overperforming squad this season, however, and has provided two assists in 15 games across all competitions.

7. Manu Garcia

Club: Toulouse

Position: Attacking midfield

Age: 20

League appearances: 16

Former Spanish U19 international Manu Garcia has already managed 1,159 minutes of Ligue 1 football with Toulouse this season, providing two assists for his teammates in the process. Whether or not he can get back to the prominence that saw him play four first-team games for City in 2015/16, scoring once, remains to be seen but the competitive football he is playing in France’s top flight will certainly help.

6. Lukas Nmecha

Club: Preston North End

Position: Forward

Age: 20

League appearances: 18

Although Nmecha hasn’t managed to score for Preston North End this season, the 20-year-old has managed to weigh in with five assists, with the club currently 15th in the Championship table. The 1,000+ minutes he has racked up shows his talent is valued.

5. Matthew Smith

Club: FC Twente

Position: Centre-midfield

Age: 19

League appearances: 16

Nobody expected 2010 Eredivisie champions FC Twente to be playing in the Dutch second division this season, but that’s exactly how it has panned out after the club finished bottom of the top flight last term.

Twente have adjusted well, though, and are currently fourth in the Eerste Divisie, just three points off top spot; thanks in part to the contribution of Matthew Smith, who has scored one goal and provided one assist across his 18 appearances.

More importantly, though, he has performed excellently as a screening player and earned his first four caps for the Welsh senior side under Ryan Giggs.

4. Thierry Ambrose

Club: Lens

Position: Forward

Age: 21

League appearances: 16

Thierry Ambrose came with a very big reputation when Manchester City picked him up from Auxerre’s famed youth academy in 2013.

At 21-years-old, it hasn’t quite happened for the former French youth international, but he is getting plenty of football for Ligue 2 side Lens this season, scoring four goals in 18 games, providing another three assists along the way. He could yet forge a career for himself in France.

3. Pablo Mari

Club: Deportivo La Coruna

Position: Centre-back

Age: 25

League appearances: 16

At 25-years-old, Pablo Mari’s loan spell is more an advert for a new club than an attempt to get into Pep Guardiola’s plans. However, Mari has been excellent at the heart of Deportivo’s defence, helping them to second in the Spanish Segunda so far, with the third-fewest goals conceded (13) in the division.

Mari has also proved to be a threat at the other end too, bagging himself two goals.

2. Yangel Herrera

Club: New York City FC

Position: Centre-midfield

Age: 20

League appearances: 18

Ankle surgery seriously disrupted Yangel Herrera’s two-year loan spell at New York City FC. However, the latter half of his second season in MLS has seen Herrera gain full fitness and win his spot at the heart of their midfield.

Herrera provided two assists and developed into a fantastic screen for the NYCFC defence, making at least 1.1 more tackles per game (3.9) than any other teammate as he helped the club reach the MLS playoffs this season.

Whether or not this is enough to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s plans is a big question, but with the club looking to find an understudy and eventual replacement for Fernandinho, the captain of Venezuela’s 2017 U20 World Cup finalists could be an ideal in-house fix.

1. Tosin Adarabioyo

Club: West Bromwich Albion

Position: Centre-back

Age: 21

League appearances: 15

Tosin Adarabioyo has cemented his place at the heart of the West Brom defence in recent weeks and is showing real signs of developing into a top-class centre-back.

Baggies manager Darren Moore has been glowing in his references, saying in November: “He’s mature for one so young. He’s got a size and a stature, a great understanding of the game and a wonderful temperament.

“The boy has a determination to go to the very highest level of the game.”

Moore is obviously a big fan, not hard to see why when only the experienced Gareth Barry and Craig Dawson (both two) have made more interceptions than Adarabioyo (1.8) per 90 minutes this season. Pep Guardiola also rates Adarabioyo very highly and it will be interesting to see where the 21-year-old goes after this loan spell, which has been a complete success so far.
