Dejan Lovren sets his sights on Liverpool matching Arsenal’s record this season

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren believes his side can emulate Arsenal’s Invincibles by not losing a single game this season.

The Reds are currently atop the Premier League table and remain unbeaten after 17 matches, winning 14 and drawing three.

Can Liverpool follow in the footsteps of Arsenal’s Invincibles? Five things to know…

  1. Arsenal’s Invincibles went the entire 2003/04 Premier League season unbeaten.
  2. They became only the second English club to enjoy an Invincibles season after Preston North End’s Old Invincibles achieved that feat in 1888/89.
  3. Liverpool have looked good value for their unbeaten run, so far passing tests against their top six rivals, including a clean sheet against Man City.
  4. Jurgen Klopp has significantly strengthened his defence this term, with the club conceding just seven league goals and keeping 10 clean sheets.
  5. Lovren – who has played just five league games – now believes the Reds can become the third Invincibles club on English soil.

Lovren started in his side’s 3-1 win against rivals Manchester United on Sunday, with three points enough to leapfrog Man City at the summit of the table.

It was a convincing victory at Anfield with Liverpool registering 36 shots; and so, having seemingly resolved their defensive vulnerabilities, the Croat believes his side are in good nick to match Arsenal’s past achievement.

“It’s a good result I would say for us,” the centre-back said after Sunday’s win (via the Independent). “Hopefully we can be unbeaten until the end of the season.

“Of course it will be a challenge but this is what we want, this is why we came here to Liverpool, because we know we can do it. Arsenal did it before so why not?”

Liverpool will contest in the Friday night fixture this week, as they lock horns with Wolverhampton Wanderers at the Molineux; another win could take them four points ahead of City, putting further pressure on Pep Guardiola to get a result against Crystal Palace, but Lovren insists his side are not worried about the current champions and their fixture schedule.

“Look, there’s a competition,” he said. “This is what we want, but we don’t look at who is in front of us or behind us. It’s just about us.

“It’s more about how we train, how we do on the pitch and the result will come. There are quite a lot of games still to go but we go game-by-game.”

“I’m not sure that [City] have any weaknesses. Last year they won with 19 points. They know how to manage even when they lose. They also lost one or two games last year. Still they managed to be 19 points ahead. It doesn’t mean anything.

“There are so many games in front of us and in front of them. It will be a tight race and it’s not only City. Tottenham is only a couple of points behind.

“You cannot sit and enjoy and say: ‘We have five or six points in front of everyone’. It doesn’t work like that. Every game for us is a final.”

Lovren: “even the 25th player is important”

Lovren is set to keep his place in the starting XI with Joe Gomez and Joel Matip currently out injured, while Trent Alexander-Arnold and James Milner were also forced to sit out of Sunday’s win with slight agitations.

As such, Nathaniel Clyne stepped in at right-back and made his first league start since May, putting in an impressive performance, which did not go unnoticed on Lovren’s watch.

“I think there are quite a lot of players who have been for a couple of seasons now with Jurgen,” he said.

“We know and he knows what we need to do so there’s not too much to say, especially for Clyney. When you look back, he didn’t play for I don’t know how many months and he did a fantastic game.

“This is important, and of course it’s important to keep this momentum and to enjoy this moment. Hopefully there won’t be many injuries because we need everyone. Today, even the 25th player is important.”
