Manuel Neuer excited for Bayern’s Champions League clash against “vulnerable” Liverpool

Liverpool have been given a tough test in the last-16 of the Champions League as they face German champions Bayern Munich.

Jurgen Klopp’s side are leading the way in the Premier League this season and broke a club record by going 18 unbeaten after victory over Manchester United was sealed with a 3-1 win at Anfield.

Liverpool versus Bayern: Five things you need to know

  1. Liverpool are top of the league and have just set a new record going 18 unbeaten for the first time in the club’s Premier League history.
  2. Meanwhile, Bayern have struggled and are nine points behind Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund after 15 rounds.
  3. Liverpool scraped through to the knockout stages thanks to a dramatic final group match against Napoli.
  4. Bayern topped their Champions League group winning four and drawing the other two games to remain unbeaten in Europe this season.
  5. The two sides have never met in the Champions League before.

The Reds qualified by beating Napoli in a dramatic final group match at Anfield thanks to a first-half Mohamed Salah goal. They finished second behind PSG who will play Manchester United. Bayern, who have been struggling in the Bundesliga this campaign, won their group while remaining unbeaten. The German side finished above Ajax who will take on Real Madrid in the first knockout round.

Liverpool last met Bayern in a competitive game in the European Super Cup in 2001 which the Red won 3-2 but Klopp will be very familiar with the Bavarian side having faced them many times during his time in Germany.

Bayern sit third in the German top flight, nine points behind early pace setters Borussia Dortmund while Liverpool are top of the Premier League and unbeaten this season.

And, while conceding neither side will be happy about the draw, Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer is exciting for a good match.

“They’re having a very good season and we know they were in the Champions League final last year,” he told the Bayern website.

“They certainly won’t be delighted with the draw, either. They can counter quickly and they’re dangerous in front of goal, but they’re also vulnerable, as we’ve seen, and they’ll be up against a good Bayern attack.

“It’ll be a great game both at Liverpool and also at home at the Allianz Arena.”

Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic also had his say on the draw, describing the Reds as ‘the team of the hour’.

“They’re the team of the hour, they’re the league leaders in England,” he said.

“They play good football, they’re very physical and they’re full of energy. You need two good days. They were in the final last year, they’re a top side, it’s a tough one but these are the challenges that you look forward to as a player and that you have to overcome in your career.”

The first leg will be played at Anfield on February 19, 2019 with the return at the Allianz on March 13.
