Paris Saint-Germain manager Thomas Tuchel has demanded his players respect the Champions League experience of Jose Mourinho and Manchester United.
After topping a group including Liverpool and Napoli, the French champions have drawn the Red Devils in the last-16 of this season’s competition as they look to move past this stage for the first time since 2016.
Can PSG finally reach the latter stages of the UCL? Five key things to know…
- Since the Qatari takeover in 2011, PSG’s main aim has been to win the Champions League.
- They have had six Champions League campaigns since then, but have failed to go beyond the quarter-final stage.
- The French champions topped group C of this season’s competition, ahead of Liverpool and Napoli.
- PSG will come up against Man United in the last 16, with many predicting they will breeze past Mourinho’s struggling side.
- Thomas Tuchel has urged his players to respect Man United and claimed it will be a ‘big challenge’.
Many pundits are already making PSG massive favourites for the tie, with their trident of Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Edinson Cavani looking too strong for Mourinho’s side on paper.
But Tuchel has been quick to maintain that this will be a tough tie, with Man United and Mourinho having incredible pedigree in the Champions League.
“It’s always difficult to play Manchester United,” said Tuchel. “They have lots of experience in this competition, they’ve won it numerous times. It’s always difficult to play at Old Trafford, it’s always a big challenge.
“It’s a big challenge for us, but if I were a spectator I would watch this game on TV.”
The former Dortmund manager also crushed any talk of PSG being clear favourites for the tie: “Favourite? I do not think so, because we have a lack of experience in the quarter and semi-finals.
“We must respect the clubs that have this experience and Manchester United is one of them.
“It’s the same thing against Mourinho. He has lots of experience in this competition and you must have respect. But we are confident in ourselves and I am convinced that we can win.”
