Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino rejects rumours he is preparing to leave the club for Manchester United.
Rumours have been circulating around Pochettino’s tenure in north London since the beginning of the season and have intensified in recent weeks due to Jose Mourinho’s failings at Old Trafford.
Five reasons why Spurs will be desperate to keep Pochettino…
- The Argentine has proven adept at changing his side’s style of play to get the best results from games.
- Pochettino has overcome a tight budget by bringing in emerging talent to the club, notably Eric Dier and Dele Alli.
- He is very composed and consistently defends his players when they come under fire.
- He secured Southampton’s highest points tally since the Premier League began and their highest finish since the 2002/03 season.
- Spurs’ defence has proven to be consistently solid under Pochettino. They conceded the third fewest goals in the league last season (36).
The Argentine coach insists that he has no plans to leave the club and has maintained that he’s happy in north London.
“Tottenham has given me value,” he told Goal. “I feel happy here in Tottenham because I feel the recognition for our job. We feel that.
“When (club chairman) Daniel Levy extended my contract for five years, it is because he believed in that moment and period, we are the best people to manage this boat and this club. It is recognition for us.
“I don’t need to listen about what goes around. The most important thing is how you are made to feel in your home.”
Do Spurs need to dig further into their pockets to compete with the bigger clubs?
Not According to Pochettino, who likened Spurs’ budget to clubs like Everton, West Ham and Leicester City earlier in the season. The Foxes famously won the league in 2015, defying all expectations, and they did it without even threatening any transfer records.
“When you compare the investment or budget, we are in the same position as Everton, West Ham or Leicester. Of course we are so far from the big sides like City or United,” Pochettino told the Guardian.
“But in points we are closer to them than the others. In performance last season the same; we are closer in points than our budget says.”
Leicester have failed to replicate that fairy tale in subsequent seasons and have regressed to the mid-table ever since, but Pochettino is right that throwing cash isn’t always a fool-proof solution. This assertion becomes apparent when considering Manchester United this season.
Since Pochettino took over at Spurs, United have spent £630m, with a net spend of £440m. In the same time, Spurs have spent £260m with a net spend of £19m. Spurs are currently third and 10 points above the Red Devils.
Spurs next play Barcelona in the Champions League on Tuesday.
