Wijnaldum denies Liverpool dressing room ‘ego trip’ after accidental Instagram like

Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has spoken out after he appeared to like an Instagram comment from a fan suggesting there was ‘an ego trip’ in the Liverpool dressing room.

The 27-year-old scored in the Reds 2-1 victory over Spurs at Wembley on Saturday but his side could have been out of sight before Erik Lamela’s late strike, with the likes of Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane guilty of missing several chances in the second half.

Wijnaldum appeared to like a comment from a fan who had taken to Instagram to express his concerns regarding Liverpool’s finishing and even suggested that Salah and Mane’s reluctance to pass to each other on Saturday could be a sign that the pair have fallen out because of a desire to outperform each other this season.

The comment, according to the Liverpool Echo, read: “What characterised Liverpool’s attack last season was the teamwork and understanding between Salah, Firmino and Mane.

“It didn’t matter who scores, but who is in the best situation to assist him (another player) a goal, but what happens this season is only single play.

“Especially from Mane, who showed up today in the Tottenham match not passing to Salah in more than one chance. I do not really know why!

“Is it an ego?! I think Klopp should fix the situation quickly before it costs him important matches and maybe championships.”

Wijnaldum’s interaction with the comment had some Liverpool fans worrying that there might be an issue in the dressing room, but the Liverpool midfielder cleared things up on Monday by claiming he did not mean to like it.

“I think I accidentally liked this comment while I was scrolling through the comments,” he replied.

“So don’t worry, there’s no ego trip. We’re a team and we know that.”

5 from 5 for Liverpool, but is the front 3 firing yet?

Liverpool sit 2nd in the Premier League following Saturday’s win at Wembley, with Chelsea level on points in 1st but ahead on goal difference.

The Reds have conceded just two goals so far this season and many believe they could be on the verge of mounting a serious title challenge this season.

But despite their perfect start, Liverpool’s attack do not appear to have found their ‘A game’ quite yet, suggesting that Klopp’s side is still capable of going up a few gears this season.

The Reds begin their Champions League campaign with a home tie against PSG on Tuesday and Klopp says he is not at all worried by Salah and Mané’s form in front of goal against Spurs.

“It’s not greedy. It’s normal,” Klopp told reporters, via Football 365. “I want them to score and encourage them to do so, but there are moments when they have to pass.

“Maybe one situation I would say a pass would have been better, all the others were OK.”
