Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has claimed that Marcus Rashford is in danger of becoming the next Danny Welbeck at Manchester United.
Carragher made the controversial suggestion after the England win against Switzerland that Rashford should look to build a career away from United if he is to truly fulfil his potential, citing Romelu Lukaku’s progress at Everton as an example to follow.
The Sky Sports pundit has now followed up on his suggestion by claiming that the England international could well become the next Welbeck if he fails to cement a starting berth in his natural position.
Welbeck originally burst onto the scene at Old Trafford as an exceptionally talented striker, but was soon pushed wide to accommodate the more lethal forwards at United in Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie.
Likewise, Rashford has been transformed into an inside forward, originally to allow Zlatan Ibrahimovic room to thrive centrally, but now Lukaku occupies the lone striker role, and Carragher is concerned for the 20-year-old.
Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: “Marcus Rashford does not want to become Danny Welbeck.
“He came through at United as a centre-forward, then he was used on the left and the right, but then he ends up becoming a squad player. He moves to Arsenal, exactly the same thing happens. Thats what you don’t want.”
So far this season Rashford has only started one match, making a further two from the bench, and is yet to register a goal or an assist in United’s opening five Premier League matches.
The Red Devils next face Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
