Ozil's place at Arsenal is coming under question - and Ramsey's beating him at his own game

Arsenal should prioritise retaining Aaron Ramsey at the end of the season and sell Mesut Ozil, according to Ray Parlour.

Ramsey is set to leave the Gunners in the summer with his contract running out, and will be free to talk to foreign clubs about a move from January.

Why should Arsenal sell Ozil and keep Ramsey? Five key things to know…

  1. Aaron Ramsey’s current deal at Arsenal runs out at the end of the season, and looks likely to leave the club in the summer.
  2. With his own future in doubt in January, Ozil signed a new contract at Arsenal earning a reported £350,000 per week.
  3. But the German has been underwhelming for the Gunners this season, and was absent for Arsenal’s 4-2 win over Spurs.
  4. And Arsenal should sell Ozil to keep Ramsey according to former midfielder Ray Parlour.
  5. Aaron Ramsey has recorded six assists in the Premier League this season, the joint-most in the division.

Ramsey was instrumental from the bench in Arsenal’s 4-2 win over north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday, a game Ozil missed through a back injury.

The Welshman recorded two assists at the Emirates, to take his total tally to six for the Premier League season – the most in the division.

Four of Ramsey’s six assists have also come from substitute appearances, the most of any player in the league. And it is his influence which leads Parlour to believe Ramsey should stay at Arsenal with Ozil making way.

“My personal decision would be that I’d rather keep Ramsey than Ozil,” Parlour told talkSport, via the Mirror.

“I think Aaron brings a little bit more to the team. Mesut Ozil is a great player, I’m not doubting that, but you can leave him out.

“We didn’t miss him yesterday, whereas I thought Ramsey made an impact in the second half. Aaron has been there a long time, he’s been there for ten years, so you’ve got to look that as well.

“Some players would sulk and say, I’m leaving at the end of the season, so it doesn’t really matter, but his attitude has been spot on.

“He knows he’s leaving at the end of the season, but he was brilliant in mid-week in the Europa League. I would rather have Aaron Ramsey.”

Another former Arsenal player, Ian Wright, has also given his thoughts on the situation, feeling the Gunners are not getting the value for their money with Ozil and Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

“As good as [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan and Ozil are, in respect to what they’re earning we’re talking about £500,000-a-week,” Wright said on BBC 5Live Sport.

“I do not believe that Arsenal can afford to be paying that sort of money without getting a return, especially when you look at what they’re trying to do at the moment.

“You’re going to lose [Aaron] Ramsey as well who probably wants £200,000 so we’re going up to £700,000-a-week in money that we’re going to have to give.

“Surely you’ve got to find three or four players that you can pay a lot of money to that will give you the output you want.”

Mesut Ozil reacts to Arsenal’s thrilling NLD win v Spurs

Ozil watched Arsenal’s 4-2 win over Tottenham from the sidelines due to a back injury, the second consecutive game he missed having been an unused substitute for the club’s 2-1 win against Bournemouth.

And the German showed his excitement of the win with a celebratory tweet posted after full-time, referring to left-back Sead Kolasinac’s reaction to the Gunners’ comeback.

Arsenal manager Unai Emery simply responded to reporters with “I don’t know” when asked whether the former Germany international would be watching the match at the Emirates.

Ozil’s tweet seems to suggest that he did not miss the game, or that he was keen to distance himself from any further controversy regarding his absence.
