Playmaker not bothered by failed Spurs transfer

Aston Villa midfielder Jack Grealish has insisted he is not fazed by his potential move to Tottenham Hotspur failing to materialise.

Grealish was a target of the north London club in the summer following Aston Villa’s failure to earn promotion but no deal was agreed.

What stopped Spurs signing Grealish? Five key things to know…

  1. Grealish was put up for sale towards the end of last season with Aston Villa looking to raise funds to comply with Financial Fair Play.
  2. As a result, Spurs stated their interest and looked favourites to become Grealish’s new club in the summer.
  3. But Villa received new investment in the summer, meaning they were able to fight to keep Grealish, pricing out interest from Tottenham.
  4. And, despite his dream of playing in the Champions League ending, Grealish has admitted he is not bothered by the failed move.
  5. Tottenham failed to make a single signing during the summer transfer window.

The English midfielder went on to sign a new five-year contract with Villa and is finally finding form under new manager Dean Smith after a slow start to the season.

And while Grealish admitted the speculation was difficult to deal with, the 23-year-old insisted he has no problems with not joining Tottenham.

“The speculation was difficult to deal with because every young player wants to play at the top, especially when it’s a team in the Champions League,” he told Sky Sports.

“But when it didn’t happen, it didn’t bother me at all, because my dream as a kid was to play for Aston Villa and I would never ever take that for granted, so I got my head down and now hopefully I can get this club back to where it belongs.”

Grealish has scored two goals and recorded three assists for Villa this season, including one in the 4-2 Second City derby win over arch-rivals Birmingham City in November.

And the midfielder spoke of his happiness at playing for Villa and focussing on a return to the Premier League.

He added: “I’m playing for my boyhood club, I’ve got a great manager who believes in me.

“If you look at our recent performances, we’re a team on the up and hopefully we can get back to the dreamland, which is obviously the Premier League.”

Jack Grealish in the Premier League

Though Aston Villa have spent the past two seasons in the Championship, where Grealish has seen a lot of his game-time for the club, the 23-year-old made his breakthrough while still in the Premier League.

Tipped as one of the brightest young midfield talents at the time, Grealish’s debut came towards the end of the 2013/14 season with a two-minute cameo against Manchester City.

The following year Grealish went on to appear 16 times in the Premier League, including seven starts in a row as Villa fought off relegation, recording one assist.

Grealish’s final year in the Premier League to date saw him make just 16 appearances after struggling with an ankle injury, though the midfielder did score his first goal in a 3-2 defeat to Leicester City.
