Wolves confirm Joao Moutinho arrival from Monaco

Wolverhampton Wanderers have announced the signing of Monaco midfielder Joao Moutinho on a two-year deal for a fee worth £5m.

Moutinho – the third most-capped player in Portugal’s history – has left the Ligue 1 club after five seasons on the French Riviera, and will now join newly promoted Wolves in the club’s bid to retain Premier League status this season.

Wolves already boast a strong Portuguese contingent in their ranks courtesy of links with super-agent Jorge Mendes, and now manager Nuno Espirito Santo has added an eighth in Moutinho.

The likes of Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves, Rui Patricio, Ivan Cavaleiro and Helder Costa already sit in the club’s armoury, and Moutinho will add some much-needed experience to the middle of the park.

Speaking on his arrival at Wolves, the 31-year-old told the club’s official website: “It was one of my objectives to play in the Premier League.

“I hope to help the club achieve their objectives. I am very excited, it is a new experience with a great club and I want to help the team, the players and club to progress.

“I know it’s very difficult with big teams in Premier League but our mentality – my mentality – is to play every game to win and I hope with my experience and my quality as a team we can achieve our goals and our objectives.

“This club is a big club and a very good project and have players I know very well.”

Moutinho was instrumental in Portugal’s 2016 European Championship success, and he also made three appearances at the World Cup this summer, including a start in the nation’s 3-3 draw with Spain.

A product of Sporting CP’s esteemed academy, Moutinho progressed through the ranks and made 259 appearances across all competitions for the club before signing with Porto in 2010.

He would go on to win three successive Primeira Liga titles during his time at the Estadio do Dragao and the UEFA Europa League during his maiden campaign, before signing with Monaco in 2013.

At the Stade Louis II, Moutinho amassed over 200 appearances for Les Monegasques and famously clinched the Ligue 1 title in the 2016/17 season.
