Ronaldo reveals what Roma players said to him during Man Utd thrashing

Juventus forward Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed he has not been on good terms with AS Roma since he was part of the Manchester United side which thrashed the Italians 7-1 in the Champions League in 2007.

The 33-year-old will be lining up against Roma for the first time as a Juventus player in Serie A this weekend.

Man Utd 7-1 Roma: Five key things to know…

  1. Manchester United and Roma were drawn against each other in the 2006/07 Champions League quarter-finals.
  2. Roma won the first leg 2-1 at home, giving United an uphill task in the return fixture.
  3. But Sir Alex Ferguson’s side blew the Italians away with a 7-1 victory at Old Trafford to book their place in the semi-finals.
  4. Ronaldo scored twice on the night in between goals from Michael Carrick, Alan Smith, Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra.
  5. The Portugal international claims some Roma players threatened him as a result of the embarrassment.

Ronaldo left United to join Real Madrid at the end of the following season, winning the Ballon d’Or on five occasions since.

Ahead of Saturday’s encounter with Roma, Ronaldo has revealed how the opposition were not pleased with United’s dominance on that night in 2007.

“When it was 6-0, they asked me to stop, an opponent begged me to stop dribbling,” Ronaldo said, according to talkSPORT.

“Others threatened to hurt me.

“Roma? There is no player with whom I would exchange a shirt.”

How is Ronaldo getting on at Juventus?

Ronaldo’s shock move from Real Madrid to Juventus over the summer took everybody surprise.

He has settled quickly in a new league, scoring 11 Serie A goals so far; only Genoa’s Krzysztof Piatek has netted more this season (12).

However, Ronaldo has struggled in the Champions League, scoring just once in five appearances – a stunning volley against Manchester United at the Allianz Stadium.

The five-time Champions League winner was sent off in Juventus’ away trip to Valencia, meaning he missed the following match.

He’ll be hoping to improve his tally in the knockout stages when Juventus face Atletico Madrid in the round-of-16.
