Chelsea manager Maurizio Sarri has cast Danny Drinkerwater’s future with the club into doubt after he admitted the midfielder does not suit his tactics.
The Italian has admitted in the past that Chelsea have a group of midfielders at the club who share similar traits leading to speculation that some may have to move on to find first team football.
Is Danny Drinkwater’s time at Chelsea coming to an end? Five things you should know…
- Drinkwater was a key part of the Leicester City squad that won the Premier League title under Claudio Ranieri in 2015/16.
- Chelsea signed Drinkwater for £35m in September of 2017.
- Drinkwater played just 12 times in the Premier League for Chelsea last season.
- The midfielder man is yet to make a top flight appearance for Chelsea this season.
- Sarri has admitted that Drinkwater does not suit his tactical set-up.
Drinkwater has not played a Premier League minute this season for Chelsea and it is thought that he might be one of the players allowed to leave in the January transfer window.
Antonio Conte signed Drinkwater to play as part of a midfield duo but under Sarri’s system, which uses 4-3-3, he has been unable to find a place in the side.
Sarri has admitted the former Leicester man does not fit into his three man midfield leading to speculation the midfielder will have to move on to find regular minutes.
“I think for him the problem is only my football,” said Sarri (as reported via BBC).
“He’s a very good midfielder but he is suitable for a midfield two because with a three he is not really a central midfielder or suitable for centre right or centre left.”
When asked about Drinkwater’s future at the club, Sarri added: “I don’t know. It depends on the club, it’s up to him.”
The only hope for Drinkwater is the transformation seen in fellow Chelsea man Reuben Loftus-Cheek who was also struggling to make it into the team earlier in the season.
The player has played in each of the last four games for the Blues and Sarri admitted that Loftus-Cheek has finally adapted to his system.
“At the beginning of the season he was a very good player and now he is a good player that is more suited to my style of football,” said Sarri.
Chelsea’s season so far
It has been a solid season so far for Chelsea under new manager Maurizio Sarri. The Italian has seen his side remain undefeated at home while also being the only side to beat Manchester City in the Premier League this season.
The two defeats that Chelsea have suffered both came on the road as they were beaten by Wolves and Tottenham but they have also drawn four times leaving them eight points behind leaders Liverpool.
Chelsea face Leicester at home this weekend before seeing out 2018 with away trips to Watford and Crystal Palace.
