When is the UCL knockout draw? Man Utd, Barcelona & Co. wait to learn their opponents

The final week of the Champions League group stage is upon us and we are soon to find out which 16 teams will go on to the knockout stages.

Some teams have already guaranteed their spot as group winners, runners-up or by virtue of being out of reach for the teams in third and fourth.

But for others, it is still all to play for, looking to book their place in the last-16 next year.

Read on to find out all you need to know about the impending Uefa Champions League round-of-16 draw.

When is the Uefa Champions League round-of-16 draw?

The draw for the Champions League last-16 will take place on Monday, December 17 at 11am GMT, live from Uefa’s headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.

Where can I watch live?

UK residents will be able to watch the draw on BT Sport 2, channel 414 on Sky and channel 528, for Virgin Media users. BT Sport subscribers can also follow the draw online at sport.bt.com and via their BT Sport app.

Fans will also be able to stream the draw live on Uefa’s official website.

What is the draw procedure?

As usual, the last-16 draw will have restrictions with teams split into two pots: one consisting of group winners and the other of runners-up.

No team can play a club from their group or their own association, with the seeded group winners set to play the first leg away from home.

When will the round-of-16 ties be played?

The ties will be played across February and March with first legs to set for February 12-13 and 19-20, 2019.

Second legs will be played on March 5-6 and 12-13.

Who will be involved?

Ahead of the final batch of group games, three teams have secured their place as group winners with Barcelona, Porto and Real Madrid all giving themselves the best chance of a favourable tie.

Two teams are also guaranteed runners-up spots in Roma and Schalke. Seven more have confirmed their spots with finishing position just to be sorted for Ajax, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Juventus, Manchester City, Manchester United.

There are four places left in the round-of-16 with Inter Milan, Liverpool, Lyon, Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain, Shakhtar Donetsk and Tottenham Hotspur all still able to qualify.

Which teams will be looking forward to the draw?

Porto winning their group has seen them avoid Barcelona and Real Madrid from the off, with other big names set to join them in the seeded pot. Last season, the Portuguese side finished second in their group behind Besiktas as were punished with a draw against eventual runners-up Liverpool in the last-16 – though Besiktas drew Bayern Munich.

Barcelona also negotiated a tough group guaranteeing top spot with a game to spare ahead of Inter Milan and Tottenham Hotspur. The draw will see Barcelona have a good opportunity of favourable opposition should results go their way this week, potentially avoiding the like of Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City.
