Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has signed a new contract to keep him at the club until 2022.
The club announced that Simeone would be extending his time at the club after taking over in 2011.
Atletico Madrid’s greatest coach ever? Five key things to know about Diego Simeone…
- Simeone is technically the most successful manager in Atletico Madrid’s history.
- He has won La Liga, the Copa del Rey, two Europa Leagues titles and two Uefa Super Cups.
- This total of seven puts him one ahead of legendary former coach Luis Aragones.
- The side managed 90 points in their 2013/14 league winning season, their highest single-campaign points total in history.
- Simeone a three-time recipient of La Liga’s Coach of the Year award.
Simeone’s illustrious spell at Atletico Madrid is almost inconceivable for any other manager. He’s managed to create a new footballing heavyweight.
A statement released on the club’s official website read: “This way, we extend the project that began in 2011 with the arrival of the Argentine and that has brought us one of the most successful phases of our club’s history with seven trophies won.”
A full list of these trophies includes a La Liga title, Copa del Rey, Supercopa de Espana, two Europa Leagues and two Uefa Super Cups.
Add to that the defensive records and two Champions League runners-up spots and it’s easy to see why the fans and board have been so endeared to him.
Simeone’s deal keeps him at the club until 2022 and reportedly makes him the side’s highest earner, above even Antoine Griezmann.

The best in the world?
If not the world’s best coach, then definitely one of. Simeone’s pragmatic style of play is defensively solid. Scoring past Atleti is a talent in itself.
Utilising a compact and smothering defence, Simeone’s men have managed to take on sides much greater than themselves in key games.
Hoping to emulate his 2013/14 season in the Spanish capital by lifting another La Liga title, his side currently sits in third place, seven points below Barcelona.
Knocked out of the Copa del Rey, his side face off against Juventus in the Champions League’s last-16 and Simeone will be looking to avenge his two near losses.

Known as a tough player in his playing days, with an unshakeable mentality, he imposes this same mindset onto his players.
Lauded for the way he approaches the game, it also seems to have rubbed off on fans and the board who believe him to be capable of anything.
Simeone is already a legend at Atletico, having won a La Liga and Copa del Rey in his playing days there too, and so the loyalty he demonstrates by extending will be well received.
Rumours linking him to Chelsea and Manchester United jobs have often been floated around, but it seems he’s quite content to remain in Spain and add more trophies to his cabinet.
