Wolves’ Fabregas-esque rising star backed to become a “sensational” player

Former England international Danny Murphy has garlanded praise on Wolves’ midfield starlet Morgan Gibbs-White after his immaculate performance against Chelsea.

The talented tyro made his first Premier League start on Wednesday night as Nuno Espirito Santo’s side edged past Chelsea 2-1 at Molineux.

Having trailed the west London club after Ruben Loftus-Cheek scored a fortuitous deflected goal in the first-half, Gibbs-White produced a moment of magic after the restart.

The 18-year-old danced through the Chelsea midfield before teeing up Raul Jimenez who duly dispatched a low strike past Kepa Arrizabalaga to bring the scores back level.

Diogo Jota would go on to grab the winner for the West Midlands club but most of the plaudits fell on Gibbs-White, none more so than from Murphy, who has since tipped the teenager to go all the way.

Speaking on BBC’s Match of the Day, Murphy could not contain his excitement when speaking about the midfielder: “I remember when he came on against Spurs, he was passing the ball in midfield like Fabregas.

“It’s difficult not to get excited about him. He’s got everything. I really believe this guy is going to be a sensational player.”

Victory for Wolves took them up to 12th in the league, climbing above West Ham and ending their winless run of six matches, having last clinched three points nearly two months ago.

The newly-promoted side managed to end their rough patch in emphatic fashion, beating the Blues for the first time since 2011, while the five-time Premier League champions have now lost for the second time under Maurizio Sarri.

Gibbs-White’s career so far

The Stafford-born midfielder has been with Wolves since 2008, joining the academy at the age of eight and making his professional debut at just 16 against Stoke City in the FA Cup two seasons ago.

The 18-year-old would go on to make a further 11 appearances across all competitions that season under the guidance of Paul Lambert.

Following the appointment of Espirito Santo in the summer of 2017, Gibbs-White would make 13 league appearances as Wolves cantered to the Championship title last term.

This season Espirito Santo has afforded his teenage talent more first-team involvement, so far making nine Premier League appearances, including a debut start on Wednesday night.

Against Chelsea, no player completed more take-ons (3) than Gibbs-White, who also registered his first top-flight assist.

The future certainly looks bright for the England U19 international, who will look to make a similar impact when his side take on Newcastle this weekend.
