Eriksen focusing on football amid Spurs contract speculation, says agent

Christian Eriksen is focusing on his performances for Tottenham rather than contract speculation, says his agent.

Since arriving in north London, Eriksen has been key to Spurs’ recent rise but his current contract ends in 2020.

Will Eriksen sign a contract extension? Five things to know…

  1. Eriksen joined Spurs from Ajax in 2013 and has gone on to become a key figure under Mauricio Pochettino.
  2. He is the most played player under Pochettino, appearing in 222 matches.
  3. Pochettino has called for Eriksen to be given the freedom he needs to make his decision.
  4. Despite playing deeper sometimes this season, Eriksen has still been productive, scoring seven and assisting 11 goals in all competitions.
  5. Eriksen has been linked with Real Madrid but he has stated there has been a “nice dialogue” with Tottenham.

Having joined Spurs as part of the group that replaced Gareth Bale in 2013, Eriksen has, without doubt, been the most successful.

Racking up 259 club appearances, he has developed in his time at Spurs and doesn’t want to break that bond with the club according to his agent, Martin Schoots.

Speaking to ESPN, he said: “Christian only wants to focus himself on football.

“Besides his technical, tactical and athletic skills, this attitude has also contributed to his impressive transformation from a world-class talent to a world-class player.

“At this moment, I would prefer not to join the speculation about contracts and transfers.”

Having shone under Pochettino, with Harry Kane and Dele Alli out, Eriksen has yet again shown his worth to this Spurs side along with Son Heung-Min.

The Dane has registered two goals and three assists since the turn of the year, helping Spurs stay in the title race for as long as possible, and surprise Europe in their 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund.

But now at 27-years-old, Eriksen may see this seasons as his last chance before having to move to a club where lifting silverware is more realistic.

Eriksen hasn’t won a major honour since winning the Eredivisie with Ajax in 2013 and with Real Madrid supposedly looking to bring him to the Bernabeu, this could be the opportunity he’s been waiting for.

Where would Spurs stand without Eriksen?

Seeing Eriksen’s contract run down will be incredibly dangerous for Spurs. With his transfer value rapidly decreasing, this could see them struggle to find an adequate replacement should he end up leaving.

In January, it was reported that Daniel Levy had put a £225m price tag on Eriksen but now in the last 18 months of his contract, he could easily wait that out and leave on a pre-contract agreement in a year’s time.

With Spurs very much in a self-sustaining mode financially, not tying Eriksen up to a new contract could seriously hurt them.

They’ll be losing their biggest creative spark in Eriksen who has created the most chances in the Premier League in the squad (2.32 per 90 minutes), most assists (nine) and has scored the most goals from outside the box (four).

Losing a player of this calibre and having been inactive in the past two transfer windows, it looks like replacing Eriksen won’t be easy if that is how this case develops.
