Man City 3-1 Arsenal: Every player rated as Aguero hat-trick sinks sorry Arsenal

A Sergio Aguero hat-trick inspired Manchester City to a 3-1 win over Arsenal at the Etihad on Sunday.

Guardiola’s side totally overpowered the Gunners from start to finish, scoring within the first minute, and are now back in second place in the Premier League, two points behind leaders Liverpool.

Here is how every player rated as the Citizens proved they had too much firepower for the Gunners.

Manchester City

Ederson –  7 – Couldn’t do a great deal about Arsenal’s goal and was largely untroubled. His brilliant starting position allowed him to sweep behind the City defence whenever the Gunners tried to go over the top.

Kyle Walker – 7 – Put in a few good crosses and was pretty much given a free run down his wing with Kolasinac giving up on defending. Rarely tested in defence during the second half.

Nicolas Otamendi – 7 – A routine afternoon for Otamendi, who was rarely troubled by the often deadly duo of Aubameyang and Lacazette and gobbled up everything that come his way.

Aymeric Laporte – 8 – Made Alex Iwobi look like a Sunday league player by robbing him of possession and setting up Aguero early on. The Frenchman won a match-high five aerial duels and was solid as a rock in Guardiola’s defence.

Fernandinho – 7 – Was given a very demanding tactical role by Guardiola on Saturday, taking up his usual deep-lying position with the ball but dropping into the defence without it. The Brazilian carried out his task expertly, while the space afforded to him by Arsenal meant he could demonstrate his full passing range.

Ilkay Gundogan – 7 – Some poor moments on the ball were totally forgiven with that pass to Raheem Sterling for City’s second goal. Matched his teammate’s work rate as City totally suffocated Arsenal in the second half.

Kevin De Bruyne – 7 – Put in a great shift in midfield, completing four dribbles and charging City up the pitch with pace and power. A lot of his killer passes didn’t quite come off, but the idea was there and on another day, the Belgian would have clocked up a few assists for his efforts.

David Silva – 7 – Finished the game with an impressive 89% pass completion rate. Although he wasn’t as match-defining as he can be, David Silva still buzzed around and kept City ticking all over the pitch, remaining a vital cog in the Guardiola machine.

Bernardo Silva – 7 – Similar to his namesake, Bernardo Silva wasn’t as decisive as he can be, but his movement and interchanges made sure Arsenal had to work hard to keep their shape.

Sergio Aguero – 10 – Got his afternoon off to a very quick start, scoring within the first minute, and just kept on going. A little fortunate to get away with a handball to complete his hat-trick, but Aguero took full advantage of a ramshackle Arsenal defence, while his energy in leading the press from the front gives you cramp just watching.

Raheem Sterling –  8 – A couple of sloppy moments, but two assists were a fine reward for his movement and work rate. Sterling is up there with the best in the Premier League at finding and exploiting space and he proved it again here.

Subs: 

Gabriel Jesus (for Aguero, 80 mins) – n/a – Late substitute for the brilliant Aguero, didn’t have much time to influence the game.

Riyad Mahrez (for De Bruyne, 87 mins) – n/a – Only had a few minutes on the pitch after replacing a tired Kevin De Bruyne.

Arsenal 

Bernd Leno – 6 – Made a number of good saves to keep the scoreline down but terrifies Arsenal fans with his unpredictabiliy and inability to command his box. At fault for Aguero’s third goal.

Shkodran Mustafi – 5 – Was run ragged by Sergio Aguero, along with the rest of the Arsenal team. Was obviously struggling with injury in the second half before being brought off for Konstantinos Mavropanos.

Laurent Koscielny – 7 – Pulled Arsenal level with a great header and was about the only defender that looked capable of keeping City at bay. A thankless task lining up alongside a shambolic Arsenal defence on Sunday.

Nacho Monreal – 7 – A great flick to set up Koscielny’s goal but struggled with the rest of the Arsenal defence in coping with Aguero and co’s movement.

Stephan Lichtsteiner – 3 – Quite simply, useless. Lichtsteiner couldn’t handle the pace and movement of Raheem Sterling in defence, while his aim with the ball could be likened to that of the baddies in a Die Hard film – wayward.

Sead Kolasinac – 4 – Left the field with a match-low 53% pass completion rate and was ineffective at the back. His insistence on maintaining a ridiculously high position really puts Arsenal’s centre-backs under pressure, even if it is under the instruction of Emery.

Lucas Torreira – 6 – Was unable to stop City’s dominant midfield and lacked his usual bite and tenacity in front of the Arsenal defence.

Matteo Guendouzi – 7 – 93% pass completion rate and about as composed on the ball as any Arsenal player on the pitch. The 19-year-old put his more experienced teammates to shame.

Alex Iwobi – 3 – Terrible hesitation on the ball led to him being dispossessed for City’s first goal, while he barely threatened at the other end. A day to forget for Alex Iwobi.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang – 4 – Absolutely anonymous in another big game from Aubameyang for the Gunners. Didn’t get into the faces of City’s defenders enough, wasteful in possession and static with his movement.

Alexandre Lacazette – 5 – Better on the ball than his strike partner but was a victim of Aubameyang’s lack of movement, often having nobody to combine with.

Subs

Denis Suarez (for Kolasinac, 67 mins) – 5 – Replaced the poor Kolasinac but had little effect.

Aaron Ramsey (for Iwobi, 67 mins) – 5 – Not starting Ramsey was a very strange one, while Emery brought him on too late to have an effect.

Konstantinos Mavropanos (for Mustafi, 79 mins) – n/a –  Replaced the struggling Mustafi but didn’t have much time to make his presence felt.
