Liverpool are reported to have made contact with Adrien Rabiot, who has yet to sign a new deal with Paris Saint-Germain.
PSG are said to be eager to keep the 23-year-old France international, who has also courted interest from Barcelona in recent weeks.
Adrien Rabiot to leave PSG? Five things you need to know…
- It is suggested the Frenchman, on £55,000 per week, is unhappy to be earning significantly less than others at PSG.
- Rabiot, who averages 74.1 passes per game in Ligue 1 at an accuracy rate of 93%, has been backed to thrive at Barcelona by club legend Xavi.
- His contract with PSG expires next summer and it is claimed negotiations have been called off amid links to Barcelona and Liverpool.
- PSG are reportedly determined not to let the midfielder leave for Barcelona, with whom relations are strained due to the Neymar transfer saga.
- But Liverpool acquired two midfielders, Naby Keita and Fabinho, for a combined total of £99m last summer.
According to L’Equipe, as well as Liverpool and Barca, other clubs have shown interest in the midfielder. Rabiot’s contract runs out at the end of the season and clubs will have the opportunity to start negotiations with the midfielder in January.
It is doubtful that Klopp will be eager to bring another central midfielder to Anfield, as they already boast the likes of Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum, new signings Nab Keita and Fabinho, as well as Adam Lallana.
Does Rabiot have the right mentality to succeed at Europe’s biggest clubs?
Rabiot is arguably one of the best midfielders in Europe; his talents are clear for all to see. The 23-year-old’s control in possession is outstanding – he regularly completes games with a 90%+ pass-competition rate. His ability to break up play and suppress opponents in the midfield is also noteworthy.
However, Barcelona and other clubs might want to think carefully about pursuing the Frenchman, as he has developed a knack for disturbing the apple cart.
The French press were left incredulous and described him as petulant when he removed himself from Didier Deschamps reserve list prior to the World Cup.
An old adage warns against mixing business with blood and part of the problem may be that his mother, Veronique, manages his affairs as his agent.
In 2015, Veronique handed in a transfer request citing his lack of playing time under Laurent Blanc, even though he was at the tender age of 20 and featuring frequently in the first team.
All of these problems, coupled with the current impasse in contract negotiations, are clear indicators that the Frenchman might be more trouble than he’s worth.
