Danny Rose has said Tottenham Hotspur’s north London derby victory in the League Cup was motivated by the Arsenal players’ celebrations following the Premier League clash between the sides earlier in the month.
Spurs booked a League Cup semi-final meeting with Chelsea by beating the Gunners 2-0 at the Emirates on Tuesday night, just over two weeks after losing the same fixture 4-2 in the Premier League.
How did Spurs take revenge on Arsenal? Five key things to know:
- Arsenal beat Tottenham 4-2 at the Emirates in the Premier League on December 2, moving above their fierce rivals on goal difference.
- The likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Aaron Ramsey and Sead Kolasinac all posted celebratory pictures and mocked Spurs on social media after the game.
- Tottenham took revenge by knocking the Gunners out of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.
- Since the league encounter, Spurs have moved five points above Arsenal in the table and ended their EFL Cup run.
- Rose believes Tottenham’s victory was “karma” following the Arsenal players’ reaction to the first derby.
The 2-0 win was Mauricio Pochettino’s first victory at the Emirates since becoming Spurs manager in the summer of 2014.
And Rose has said Tottenham were given motivation by their opponents’ behaviour earlier this month.
“We were fully relishing the opportunity,” Rose told the Evening Standard.
“Our only motivation was remembering the nonsense that Arsenal posted after the game a few weeks ago. That was our motivation.
“Players that have only played 10 games for Arsenal were getting ahead of themselves. We used that in a positive way. It’s karma. They fully deserve what they got.
“We had the motivation of getting to the semi-final, so we’re over the moon. But the cherry on top was silencing them after remembering how they celebrated like they had won the league. We’ve put that result right.
“We’ll see where they are come the end of the season and we’ll see where we are.”
Pochettino: Rose needs to think less
Danny Rose is enjoying something of a renaissance at Tottenham having started in each of the club’s last three matches.
That may have something to do with the injury crisis at centre-back, which has seen left-back Ben Davies deputise in the middle, making rotation on the left impossible.
But not long ago, it seemed as if Rose’s Spurs career was over following a controversial interview he gave in the summer of 2017, in which he criticised the club’s transfer policy.
The 28-year-old now appears to be back in Mauricio Pochettino’s good books, but the Argentinian believes Rose needs to escape from his own thoughts from time to time in order to improve.
“There’s no doubt about Danny Rose’s quality. He’s a great player,” Pochettino said, according to the Standard.
“But like all players with quality, he needs to be focused on his job – focus, train and care about yourself and don’t think too much.
“I’m always saying, ‘Danny – hey, you’re thinking too much, you need to stop, work and deliver the job we want!’ When he arrives at the training ground, he asks, ‘What are we going to do? Laps, a training session, a tactical session? Gym or no gym? Shower or no shower? Eat or not eat?’ Stop, relax!
“We think for him, but sometimes he tries to think for us. We’ve said, ‘Danny, you spend too much energy in thinking about everything. You need to stop. When you drive home, you can start to think again.
“He spends too much energy and then he doesn’t have energy for what he needs to do. And that is a dangerous situation.”
Tottenham face Everton at Goodison Park in the Premier League this weekend.
