Girona president Delfi Geli has denied claims Cristhian Stuani will leave the club for Barcelona this January.
Barcelona have been linked with signing a new forward in the current transfer window as back up for Luis Suarez, with Cristhian Stuani one of the potential targets.
Will Barcelona sign Stuani? Four key things to know…
- Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde has confirmed the club are looking to sign a new striker this month to provide back up for Luis Suarez.
- Girona forward Cristhian Stuani is one of a list of players currently being linked with a move to the Nou Camp, alongside Alvaro Morata and Carlos Vela.
- But Girona president Delfi has insisted Stuani will be staying at the club this month.
- Stuani has scored 12 goals in La Liga so far this season, more than any other Girona player.
Stuani has scored 12 goals in La Liga so far this season, and is the competition’s third-highest scorer behind Suarez and Lionel Messi – who have 14 and 17 respectively.
According to reports, Stuani has a release clause of €15m in his current contract at Girona, something Barcelona could easily exploit to get their man.
But, Girona president Geli remains adamant Stuani will not move to the club’s Calatan rivals.
“There is nothing to say about this,” he told Cadena Ser.
“Stuani is our players, he is very happy here and we are very happy to have him here, there are no other updates.
“This story does not have basis in fact, I cannot say anything else.”
Stuani joined Girona from Middlesbrough in 2017 and has found himself back amongst the goals with 34 in 51 appearances for the Spanish side.
Valverde confirms Barcelona plans to sign striker
Barcelona have also been linked with moves for Alvaro Morata and Carlos Vela, though deals for both look unlikely with the former almost certain to join Atletico Madrid.
But, Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde has confirmed Barcelona’s plans to sign a new striker this month.
He said: “Signing a forward? We will try to do that in this window but if we do not then we will continue with the players who are here and give chances to those in the B team.”
Though Suarez is the second-highest goalscorer in La Liga, the Uruguayan looks to be starting his decline and, about to turn 32, may not have much longer as Barcelona’s starting striker.
This is something Suarez has commented on himself in the past, saying: “First of all, at my age and with the career I have had, I have to be above any criticism. Now, when they say Barcelona need a new No. 9, there’s nothing strange about it.
“Obviously they have to bring players in. I am 31 and Barca have to think, as a club, about the future. They’re always going to need strikers, left-backs or whatever position it may be.”
Suarez’s present deal with Barcelona runs out in 2021, when the striker would be 34 and potentially ready to retire from football after a successful goal-laden career.
