Atletico chief hits back at Ronaldo – “He only has three Champions Leagues!”

Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has hit back at Cristiano Ronaldo by claiming the Portuguese “only has three Champions League titles.”

Ronaldo, in fact, has five winners medals to his name so far, picking up four at Real Madrid after winning his first with Manchester United in 2008.

Is Juventus’ Champions League dream over? Five things to know…

  1. The last of Juve’s two Champions League titles came back in 1996.
  2. The Old Lady have been runners-up seven times, more than any other team in the competition’s history.
  3. After losing their last five finals, Juve had hoped the £105m signing of Cristiano Ronaldo would help end their bad luck.
  4. After topping Group H, the Italians drew Atletico Madrid and are 2-0 behind after the first leg.
  5. Ronaldo has scored just one goal in the competition this season but still reminded Atletico fans of his Champions League record on Wednesday.

Atletico beat Ronaldo’s new side, Juventus, 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash on Wednesday, with their second goal deflecting in off the five-time Balon d’Or winner.

Predictably, Ronaldo then took a fair amount of flak from the home crowd, responding by reminding them of his five Champions League titles compared to Atletico’s none via a hand gesture.

But Cerezo has blasted that claim by insisting the 154-time Portugal international only has three titles to his name.

The Atletico supremo told Radio CRC: “A small clarification is that Cristiano Ronaldo has not won five Champions Leagues at all, but only three. The remaining two against Atletico, he did not really win them.

“Who won those two finals? I will tell you in the next interview!”

Ronaldo has scored 21 goals in 33 games for Juventus so far but has only scored once in the Champions League this season.

Simeone celebrates in bizarre fashion

In a dramatic night inside the Wanda Metropolitano, Atletico put in a stellar performance to overcome the Italian champions and take a priceless 2-0 lead to Turin for the second leg.

Goals from centre-backs Diego Godin and Jose Gimenez handed Los Colchoneros a crucial advantage, with manager Diego Simeone celebrating the victory in truly bizarre fashion, grabbing his crotch in front of the home supporters.

He told reporters (via Goal) afterwards: “I wanted to say to our fans we have balls.”

Cerezo has not condemned Simeone’s actions, adding on the display of his manager: “It was a great match, despite the result being a little tight.

“His gesture was due to a moment of great tension, I understand and do not condemn him.”
