Man Utd urged to give Ander Herrera a new deal

Former Manchester United captain, Bryan Robson, has urged the club to give Ander Herrera a new contract.

The Spanish midfielder has made 181 appearances for the club since joining from Athletic Bilbao in 2014 but his contract is due to expire at the end of this season, with no new agreement in place as of yet.

Does Herrera deserve a new contract? Five key things to know…

And Robson, who won two league titles and three FA Cups during his playing days with the Red Devils, believes Herrera brings the best out of his teammates and should be rewarded for his recent performance with a new contract.

“I’d definitely keep ahold of Herrera,” the former England captain told Manchester Evening News.

“I don’t think it’s any coincidence that since Ander got back in the team, everybody has been talking about [Anthony] Martial and Marcus Rashford and [Paul] Pogba, but I think Herrera has played really well since he came into the team.

“Because he’s playing week in, week out, he’s a lot sharper than when he was coming into the team for maybe one game and then he was on the bench. I think playing regularly has brought the best out of Ander.”

Herrera’s work rate and determination have made him a firm fan favourite at Old Trafford and it is these attributes that make Robson believe the 29-year-old is the ideal, all-round midfielder.

“He’s a worker. He works so hard for the team,” Robson explained.

“He knows the position of a central midfield player. He protects the back four and he doesn’t give the ball away very often.

“He’s a decent passer of the ball but he allows people like Pogba and the attacking midfield players to get on with the game.

“The good thing about Ander as well is that he can actually score you a goal if he’s in the team all the time.”

Herrera: Solskjaer has ‘clicked’ with United players

Man United have been resurgent since the appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as caretaker manager in December and are now back in contention for a top-four finish.

And rather than that form being down to any tactical shift from the Norwegian, Herrera believes Solskjaer has simply ‘clicked’ with his squad, helping to get the best out of his star players.

“Ole had that click with some players that they are performing at their best,” Herrera told ESPN FC. “He is getting the best from [Marcus] Rashford, he is getting the best from Paul [Pogba], he is getting the best from Anthony [Martial], from Jesse [Lingard]. That’s not easy.

“When you are a manager, we sometimes speak too much about tactics. But the most difficult thing for a manager is to get the best from his best players and this manager is doing it. We have all seen it.”
