Bayern sold Juan Bernat because of his Champions League mistake, says Uli Hoeness

Bayern Munich president Uli Hoeness has launched a scathing attack on PSG left-back Juan Bernat after he was sold by the German champions this summer.

Spain defender Bernat left for PSG on transfer deadline day for a fee believed to be in the region of €15m.

Bayern have had a poor start to the season by their standards and are currently in sixth position having clocked up 13 points from seven Bundesliga matches.

Manager Niko Kovac, who took charge of the club this summer, is already under fire and the club has come in for a lot of criticism in recent weeks.

So much so, that a press conference was called on Friday so that senior figures could speak to the media about their supposed harsh treatment of the Bundesliga side.

Hoeness criticised the theory that Bayern should never have sold Bernat this summer and even revealed the specific time when the club decided to sell him.

“When we played in Seville, he was solely responsible for us almost being eliminated,” Hoeness told reporters.

“That day (the Champions League first leg against Sevilla), we decided that we would sell him because he almost cost us all the success in the Champions League.”

A scare in Seville

It seems Bayern’s decision to sell Bernat was made back in April.

They actually won their Champions League quarter-final first leg with Sevilla 2-1 but had to come from behind on the night.

Bernat, 25, was brushed aside by Pablo Sarabia before he put the hosts 1-0 up and it seems this incident was when the club decided to cut their losses.

The left-back only played four more games for Bayern after that and was subsequently sold to Thomas Tuchel’s side in August.

He was criticised for giving away a penalty in PSG’s opening Champions League tie against Liverpool at Anfield in September, with the French side going on to lose the match 3-2.
