Bailly has “buckled” where Lindelof showed courage – Garth Crooks

Garth Crooks has said Eric Bailly has “buckled” where Victor Lindelof has shown courage for United.

The former Tottenham Hotspur player made the observation after Jose Mourinho’s United beat Everton 2-1 at Old Trafford this weekend.

And Lindelof, who has been less than convincing since signing for the Manchester club, applied himself well in the league tie and in previous fixtures.

Meanwhile, Eric Bailly, often seen as the most gifted centre-back at the club, has wilted under the pressure, according to Crooks.

I have watched this lad perform for Manchester United with my head in my hands in utter despair at times. But not any more,” wrote Crooks, in his team of the weak column for BBC Sport.

“Playing at Old Trafford is all about coming to terms with the pressure and this is what Lindelof has done. Eric Bailly has buckled under that expectation but Sweden international Lindelof has stood firm under the most intense scrutiny and that was very evident against Everton. He has courage.”

Man Utd’s top-four hopes hinge on Martial and Pogba

If United are to salvage a top-four spot this season, which is already somewhat unlikely given their league position and general form this season in relation to the rest of the usual top 6 sides, then Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial must step up continually and prove difference makers for their side.

Pogba is United’s primary assister in the side with three, the next best in the team is Mata and Fellaini with one apiece.

Currently, Pogba has assisted three of Martial’s five goals this season, United’s most common assist-to-scorer combo.

With the likes of Romelu Lukaku out of sorts, Rashford still developing (just not as a goalscorer) and Alexis Sanchez nowhere near the player he was billed as on arrival, it’s incumbent upon United’s French cadre to continue that supply if any success can be salvaged at all this season.
