Maurizio Sarri surprised Jamie Carragher deviating from Mourinho’s Chelsea template

Jamie Carragher has admitted he is surprised that Maurizio Sarri has transformed Chelsea away from the Mourinho mould.

The former Liverpool defender thinks that there is a clear shift in style between how Chelsea played under Mourinho and some of his successors and the way Sarri is getting them to play.

Chelsea are one of three sides yet to taste defeat in the Premier League so far this season, with Manchester City and Liverpool the others.

The Blues take on Manchester United this weekend, with Mourinho facing off against his old side.

Carragher admitted he was surprised how well Chelsea have started, given the shift in style, but thinks the game against United will be a massive test for Sarri’s men.

When asked if he was shocked at how different the Italian manager’s style has been to Mourinho’s, Carragher told Sky Sports (via the Express): “Definitely because what Mourinho did, he came in and he sort of set a template that managers afterwards sort of replicated as it was very successful.

“With Sarri coming in it’s a complete style change really and the way they’ve started has been very successful.

“There’s a long way to go in the season and I thought it would take them a little bit more time, but this is another huge test for them.

“We talk about Manchester United but for Chelsea also this is a big test.”

Sarri, originally from Tuscany, made his name as a manager with Empoli where his style of football attracted many top clubs including Napoli, who he joined in 2015. He was unable to win a Scudetto in Naples but he won many plaudits for the way Napoli would play the game.

He took them to a second place finish last season before deciding to leave. Chelsea snapped him up and he has set about stamping his mark at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have won six and drawn two of their opening eight games in the Premier League and currently sit second behind Manchester City on goal difference.

They take on Manchester United at Stamford Bridge in the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday, while Liverpool travel to Huddersfield and Manchester City host Burnley.
