Manchester United legend Gary Neville says he would rather Manchester City defend their Premier League crown than see Liverpool end a 29-year league title drought.
The Reds were last champions in 1990, their 18th triumph overall, and have finished runners-up on four occasions since (1991, 2002, 2009 and 2014).
Last season under Jurgen Klopp they secured a top-four finish whilst playing an exciting brand of football and many are tipping them for glory this term. Neville, an Old Trafford favourite, says he’d like to see City come out on top again in May.
“The last thing I want to see is Manchester City and Liverpool at the top of the league! Liverpool could potentially win the league this season and that does not even bare thinking about for a United fan,” he told Sky Sports.
“And in some ways the lesser of the two evils is, let’s hope City win it if it is going to be one of the two. Because at this moment of time, Liverpool actually look really dangerous and they are going to go a lot closer, and that is a real threat.

“So that should be the biggest challenge for United, because in reality you are looking at the two most successful clubs in English football history and that should motivate everybody to try and make sure the club wins.”
Liverpool in the league under Klopp
This season marks Jurgen Klopp’s third full campaign in charge of the Reds, having joined them a few games into their 2015/16 campaign.
Under the management of the German, Liverpool have finished 8th (2015/16), 4th (2016/17) and 4th (2017/18) with the middle season seeing them accumulate their most points (76).
To date the German coach has overseen 115 Premier League outings winning 63 of those, giving him a 54.8% win rate, whilst they’ve registered 233 goals (2.03 per game) and conceded 123 goals (one every 84 minutes).
After the opening nine rounds of 2018/19 fixtures, Liverpool are level with City on 23 points atop of the embryonic league table.
