Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho says he is “not confident” the club will be retaining the services of goalkeeper David de Gea amid speculation linking him with a move to Juventus.
The 27-year-old Spaniard moved to England from boyhood team Atlético Madrid in the summer of 2011, which subsequently makes him one of the longest-serving players in United’s current squad.
Since then, De Gea, whose present deal at United expires in June 2019 (with an option of an extra year), has continuously been linked with a transfer to Real Madrid. The 13-time Champions League winners would have signed him late in the 2015 summer transfer window if not for technical issues.
Mourinho has previously claimed Real Madrid turned down the chance to sign De Gea last summer but, with reigning Serie A champions Juventus now linked and the Spanish goalkeeper yet to agree to an extension, the United boss refused to guarantee his long-term future lies at Old Trafford during a press conference on Friday morning.
“I am not confident,” Mourinho said, according to Sky Sports. “I cannot find the word in English, but let’s see what happens.
“Only the club, David and his people can answer that. My comment is only that everyone knows how good he is, how important he is for Manchester United and, if the club want to be better than it is and not worse, obviously it would be very important to keep David.”
‘De Gea will join Juventus if Man Utd don’t sell him this summer’
De Gea, according to the Times, was expected to pen a new United deal in the summer. However, such a move never transpired, with the shot-stopper now said to be aware of Juve’s interest.
An anonymous ‘Manchester United source’ told the newspaper: “De Gea played against his future club on Tuesday. Juve are an expert in intelligent deals. If United don’t sell him in the summer, Juventus will wait until the end of his contract.”
After initially struggling to adapt to the rigours of English football, De Gea is now widely considered one of Europe’s best ‘keepers.
As an instrumental figure at “The Theatre of Dreams”, he has made no fewer than 327 appearances for United to date. Throughout this period, De Gea has kept 121 clean sheets while only conceding 327 goals, or once every 90 minutes.
To date with United, he has lifted the Premier League in 2013 as well as the FA Cup (2016), League Cup (2017) and Europa League (2017).
