Real Madrid announce club have sacked Julen Lopetegui

Real Madrid have announced the club have parted company with manager Julen Lopetegui after just four months.

Lopetegui took charge of Real Madrid in the summer, replacing Zinedine Zidane who stepped down from his role after leading the club to three consecutive Champions League trophies.

Despite losing his first competitive match to rivals Atletico Madrid in the Uefa Super Cup, things started off relatively well for the former Spain boss with Real winning five of their opening six games across all competitions with just one draw.

But since Saturday, September 22, Real have lost five of their eight games across all competitions including a 1-0 Champions League defeat to CSKA Moscow – part of a four-game run without a goal for Los Blancos.

And a 5-1 defeat to Barcelona in El Clasico on Sunday proved to be the final straw for the Madrid board, with Lopetegui leaving just 24 hours later and Santiago Solari provisionally replacing him.

A statement on the club’s official website read: The Board of Directors of Real Madrid CF, meeting today October 29, 2018, has agreed to terminate the contract that linked coach Julen Lopetegui with the club.

“This decision, adopted from the highest level of responsibility, aims to change the dynamics of the first team, when all the objectives of this season are still achievable.

“The Board of Directors understands that there is a great disproportion between the quality of the staff of Real Madrid, which has 8 players nominated for the next Golden Ball, something unprecedented in the history of the club, and the results obtained to date.

“The club thanks Julen Lopetegui and all his technical team for their effort and work and wishes them the best in their professional career.

“It will be provisionally replaced by Santiago Solari, who will lead the first team starting tomorrow, Tuesday.

Prior to Lopetegui’s sacking being made official, former Chelsea manager Antonio Conte was among the names linked with Real Madrid – though rumours have quietened slightly given his poor relationship with goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
