Raheem Sterling reacts to Gary Neville’s Anthony Martial comparison

Manchester City forward Raheem Sterling has responded to Gary Neville’s claim that the 23-year-old’s rapid development is due to the quality of coaching at Manchester City.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Monday evening, Neville claimed that Manchester United winger Anthony Martial was more talented than Sterling and added that he felt it was the coaching of Pep Guardiola that had taken Sterling’s game to another level.

“Look at Raheem Sterling, who I don’t think has Martial’s talent, and his transformation over the last 12 months and why he is scoring 18, 20 goals a season. That’s the coaching Pep Guardiola has put into him,” Neville said.

Sterling managed 23 goals in all competitions for City last season and played a huge part in their 100-point title-winning campaign.

And in a light-hearted response to Neville, who coached Sterling when he was part of the England set-up, the City forward posted an Instagram story which read ‘But the transformation on his game in the last twelve months is from coaching!!! The disrespect from G Nev’ followed by four laughing face emojis.

The 23-year-old’s comment would suggest that he feels responsible for at least some of his development in the last 18 months.

Sterling helped City to a 1-0 victory over Spurs on Monday night and set up Riyad Mahrez for the winning goal.
