The 3pm Premier League action you might have missed as Liverpool go top

There were five Premier League games taking place at 3pm this afternoon with all teams eyeing up points to help shape their own respective season.

Liverpool were the only side in the top five to play this afternoon and they managed to take advantage of this by defeating Cardiff City 4-1 at Anfield thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah,  Xherdan Shaqiri and two from Sadio Mane, with the visitors scoring through Callum Paterson.

Wins for Bournemouth, Brighton & Hove Albion and Watford all gave them valuable points as the Premier League heads into its winter months.

Here is what happened in each of the Premier League’s 3 pm fixtures this afternoon.

Liverpool 4-1 Cardiff

Goals from Salah, Shaqiri and two from Mane secured three points for Liverpool but a goal from Cardiff’s Paterson denied the Reds a new impressive top-flight record.

It would have been the first time in Liverpool history that they have kept 10 home league clean sheets in a row and also an all-time record in England’s top league.

Salah pounced on a ball in the Cardiff box to put Jurgen Klopp’s side 1-0 up after just 10 minutes, nabbing his 51st goal in 66 games for the club. Mane’s second-half strike was matched by Patterson, getting his second of the season, before the Senegalese star and Shaqiri sealed the win for the Reds.

The win for Liverpool means they remain unbeaten in the Premier League after 10 matches and pushes them up to first place with both Manchester City and Chelsea yet to play their round of fixtures this weekend.

Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Two sides aiming for midtable comfortability met today at the Amex Stadium but it was the hosts who ran out as winners.

After last weeks injury at St James’ Park which saw Glenn Murray stretchered off the pitch, the experienced striker finally took his opportunity to score his 100th goal for the Seagulls this weekend.

With the ball rolling about in the penalty area, the 35-year-old tucked the ball into the bottom right corner to make him part Brighton’s second highest goalscorer in their history, across his two spells at the club.

The win pushes Brighton nine points above the relegation zone after 10 matches which will delight Chris Hughton. For Wolves, their excellent start to the campaign has slowed down, losing their last two.

Fulham 0-3 AFC Bournemouth

A real opportunity for Fulham to achieve just their second league victory of the season, they failed to do so after losing out to the ever-impressive south-coast side.

A foul by Manchester United loanee Timothy Fosu-Mensah on Callum Wilson gave the Cherries striker the chance to score from the spot which he did, placing the ball straight down the middle. His late strike secured all three points for Bournemouth.

In doing so, Wilson has officially been directly involved in more Premier League goals than any other English player this season, nine times in 10 matches.

A goal for the talented playmaker David Brooks has further showcased his abilities while also helping his side secure a greatly valued three points which keeps them in sixth place.

10 games in and it is a truly nightmarish start for Fulham who are struggling at the foot of the table despite their heavy investment in the summer.

A red card for club captain Kevin McDonald made today an awful day at the office for the Craven Cottage club and manager Slaviša Jokanović will now be wondering if he will be given the chance to turn things around.

Their defensive struggles are well documented having conceded a massive 28 goals, by far the worst in the league so far.

Southampton 0-0 Newcastle United

Two sides struggling for goals this season; this match had 0-0 written all over it before kickoff. That or 5-5!

As expected, the hosts looked the most likely to secure the victory but Mark Hughes will be frustrated that they couldn’t beat Rafa Benitez’s Newcastle side who – despite moving up a place – are still languishing in the relegation zone.

Both sides have exactly the same goal record in the Premier League. Scoring just six goals each, they have also both conceded 14 goals.

Southampton broke their own record today, but not a good one. Today’s goalless draw means they have now not scored in five Premier League games, their worst run since 2001. They have also just won one match in 16 league games at St Mary’s Stadium.

Newcastle are suffering from similar fortunes, having won just one game in their last 15.

This was by far the poorest match on display this afternoon with Newcastle the happier of the two sides, picking up another point on the road, but still waiting for that elusive first league win.

Watford 3-0 Huddersfield Town

What a win and what a start to the season for Javi Gracia’s side who blew away Huddersfield Town, who drop down to the foot of the Premier League table.

Goals from Roberto Pereyra, Gerard Deulofeu and Isaac Success mean Watford have 19 points in their opening 10 matches and sit seventh in the table, four points clear of eighth place Everton.

Talented star Pereyra has now scored six goals this season as the loss of Richarlison seems just a distant memory now for the Hornets.

In contrast, David Wagner’s side have gone yet another game without scoring this season, with the Terriers now giving themselves a massive task in trying to stay in the Premier League for the second season running.

Just four goals scored for Huddersfield, a real worry for the Yorkshire club.
