PSG and Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani won the international Golden Foot award for 2018 in Monaco on Tuesday.
The award is given out on a yearly basis to footballers who are aged at least 28 and over and standout for their achievements on the pitch and for their personality.
Previous winners include the likes of Iker Casillas, Gianluigi Buffon and Samuel Eto’o and the award is based on votes from journalists and members of the public.
Ten nominees are chosen for the Golden Foot award each year and the winner is then selected in an online vote.
Each winner then leaves a mould of their footprints on ‘The Champions Promenade’ in Monaco.
31-year-old Cavani fought off the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and fellow countryman Luis Suarez to earn this years award.
Cavani’s career so far
Uruguayan striker Cavani has just entered his sixth season with PSG, winning the Ligue 1 title in four of the five seasons he’s spent in France so far.
He made a name for himself during his time with Serie A side Napoli, where he spent three years after impressing during a previous spell with Palermo.
Cavani has scored in double digits at club level in every season since 2008-09 and has 46 goals for Uruguay to date, making him one of the most prolific forwards in world football.
His other club honours include the Coppa Italia title, which he won with Napoli in the 2011/12 season. Aside from his league titles with PSG, the 31-year-old boasts four Coupe de France titles, five Coupe de la Ligue titles and three Trophee des Champions titles.
The forward was also part of the Uruguay team that won the Copa America in 2011.
His strike partnership with Barcelona’s Luis Suarez at international level has become one of the most formidable forward lines in world football. Uruguay were knocked out of last summer’s World Cup by eventual winners France in the quarter-finals.
