Lyon forward Memphis Depay has revealed he is “fed up” with being named on the bench this season for the club.
Depay has been a substitute for four of Lyon’s opening 14 games so far this season, three times in Ligue 1 and once in the Champions League.
On each occasion Depay has come on from the bench, ranging from 35 minutes of game time at the weekend against Angers to just six minutes against Dijon in September.
But it was the 35-minute cameo against Angers which sparked the fury of Depay, who feels he deserves more respect at the club.
“I am fed up with this situation,” he said.
“Last year, I thought I had a great season. I am 24 and if I want to go to new levels, I need to be placed on a certain trajectory. Great players play all matches.
“This is the 4th time I have found myself on the bench… I deserve better. A player like me deserves more respect.
“I should be playing every match.”
Against Angers, Depay came off the bench to score and assist as Lyon won 2-1 – taking his tally for the season to four in all competitions.
Lyon are currently fourth in Ligue 1 after 11 games, having won six, though are already 10 points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain.
Depay’s Lyon career so far
Depay joined Lyon from Manchester United in January 2017, having failed to live up to the expectations put upon him at Old Trafford following a £31m move from PSV Eindhoven.
In his first half-season for the French club, Depay scored five goals in 21 games and showed promise as part of the young project on-going in Lyon.
Last year the Dutch international hit his peak as part of an exciting attack alongside Nabil Fekir, Bertrand Traore and Mariano Diaz, scoring 22 goals in all competitions including 19 in Ligue 1.
