Explained: why Vinicius Junior is now allowed to play in El Clasico despite suspension

Real Madrid starlet Vinicius Junior has been given the all-clear to face Barcelona in this season’s first El Clasico despite picking up a suspension.

The Brazilian teenager was initially ruled out of the derby after he was given a one match suspension for receiving two yellow cards in Castilla’s match against Celta Vigo B.

Vinicius Junior picked up his first yellow card for dissent and then later received a second for an alleged dive.

Los Blancos’ initial appeal was rejected by judge Carmen Perez, however, the decision was then referred to an Appeal Committee, who overturned the original decision to uphold the Brazilian’s ban.

Julen Lopetegui will now have something of a selection headache as the talented tyro joins a long list of attacking talent at the Spaniard’s disposal, with the likes of Mariano Diaz, Karim Benzema, Gareth Bale and Lucas Vazquez all available.

Vinicius has so far played twice for the European champions since completing his move from boyhood club Flamengo in the summer, though he has impressed for the club’s reserve team, scoring four goals in five matches.

“Better than staying at home”

The Brazil U-20 international recently showed his modesty after declaring his desire to keep playing for Castilla in the Segunda B league because its better for his development, as he wants to continue gaining valuable playing minutes.

“I did pre-season with the first team aware that I could end up playing with the B team,” he said in an interview (via Marca).

“I asked to play there if I wasn’t going to be considered because it’s better than staying at home.”

Real Madrid take on Barcelona in El Clasico at the Camp Nou on Sunday.
