Fifa put a stop to La Liga playing games in US

Fifa have officially denied La Liga the opportunity to stage league matches in the USA.

Current Fifa president Gianni Infantino has insisted league games “must be played” in each relevant country.

La Liga had tried to negotiate a deal that would see one Spanish league fixture take place on American soil, with Barcelona’s clash with Girona on January 26 viewed as the first potential clash outside of Europe.

However, the motion has been denied by Fifa who stressed they have not granted La Liga the permit to pursue this international venture.

“I’m strongly opposed to this and I deny any permit to play the Girona against Barca game in Miami,” Infantino confirmed (via Football Espana).

“Official games of a league must be played inside the constituency country, the Council is very clear on this.”

Last Friday, the Fifa Council had come together to thoroughly discuss the impending plans but have decided that they will not be moving forward with La Liga’s wishes.

Led by La Liga president Javier Tebas, the Spanish division recently signed a 15-year deal with entertainment company Relevant Sports which led to the discussion of playing domestic fixtures in North America.
