Ross Barkley has more talent than Dele Alli or Jesse Lingard, says Jamie Carragher

Jamie Carragher has suggested Ross Barkley could become an England regular, claiming the Chelsea star has more ability than Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard.

Barkley has scored in each of his last three Premier League appearances, becoming the first Englishman do so for Chelsea since Frank Lampard.

After making only four appearances across all competitions upon his arrival from Everton last season, the midfielder’s performances have drastically improved under the management of Maurizio Sarri.

And having found himself back in the England squad – performing brilliantly against Spain earlier this month – Barkley has received plenty of praise from onlookers, including former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football show, Carragher identified the ways in which Barkley has improved and compared him with some of his fellow England midfielders.

“He was really good for Everton but towards the end of his time there his decision-making wasn’t great,”
Carragher said, according to Goal.

“He dribbled when he should have passed, he passed when he should have dribbled, and the crowd got on his back and he found it difficult at times. Maybe it was the pressure of being the main man at Everton to create something.

“This lad has got to become mentally stronger, but in terms of ability, you think of the players who played in that position in the World Cup – Dele Alli and Jesse Lingard – and maybe you could argue they are better mentally but they are not better ability wise.

“If he becomes better mentally – as you would expect playing for a big team and achieving big things – I think he could become a must for the England team.”

Thriving in the Hamsik role

Barkley has been a crucial part of Sarri’s midfield, just as Marek Hamsik was at Napoli before Sarri left Italy.

Indeed, Barkley is arguably a better fit for the Hamsik role than the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Mateo Kovacic.

Barkley can also play a similar role for England, as he did alongside Tottenham pair Eric Dier and Harry Winks in the victory over Spain.

The 24-year-old could play a part against Derby County in the EFL Cup on Wednesday night.
