When is Chelsea vs Derby County?

Competition: Carabao Cup

Venue: Stamford Bridge

Date: Wednesday, 31 October

Kick-off: 7:45 PM BST

Match preview

When the draw for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup was made, all eyes quickly went to the tie between Derby County and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The match sees Chelsea’s all-time top goalscorer Lampard return to Stamford Bridge for the first time as a manager, aided by former Blues midfielder Jody Morris.

Lampard has already seen off a former friend in the competition, beating Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United side on penalties at Old Trafford and has started managerial life off well winning 10 of his 18 matches in charge so far.

It will not be an easy task however, for the Rams to grab a second Premier League scalp given Chelsea’s impressive start to the season under Maurizio Sarri.

Part of the Blues’ success has seen a small rise in the careers of English duo Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, both of whom are thriving under Sarri in the Italian’s left-sided midfield role, carrying some of the attacking burden of the team.

The Blues are currently unbeaten in all competitions since the Community Shield defeat to Manchester City, including 11 wins and three draws.

Where can I watch live?

Chelsea’s game against Derby County can be viewed by UK residents on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports Football, which are channels 401 and 403 respectively on Sky and channels 501 and 503 respectively for Virgin Media users.

Why are Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori allowed to play?

Unlike in the Premier League, League Cup rules allow for teams in the competition to make such agreements for players to appear against their parent clubs. As a result, Chelsea have allowed Mount and Tomori to be available for selection by Derby to face them at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday. In a statement released last week, Chelsea admitted they thought the experience from the match would be beneficial to both Mount and Tomori’s development at Derby.

Will Sarri finally give youth a chance?

Chelsea have put a lot of emphasis on being successful in all competitions this season, including the Carabao Cup. Last time out, the Blues put on a strong XI to face Liverpool but could give Callum Hudson-Odoi his first start of the season as the games come thick and fast. Ethan Ampadu is a doubt through injury, however.

When is the Carabao Cup quarter-final draw?

Last time out fans had to wait until the following Saturday evening to find out the draw for the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. But, thankfully, the draw for the quarter-finals will occur directly following Chelsea’s game against Derby County on Sky Sports, live from Stamford Bridge.

Head-to-head

Both Chelsea and Derby have enjoyed good starts under their new managers with the Blues currently unbeaten in the Premier League and Derby sixth in the Championship.

Despite the gulf in stature of recent times, Derby and Chelsea have had a fairly equal record in their past meetings. Playing 106 times in total so far, Chelsea have won 39 to Derby’s 38 including eight of the past 10.

Team news

Maurizio Sarri will be unable to call upon star man Eden Hazard for the visit of Derby with the Belgian still recovering from a back injury. Pedro and Olivier Giroud are also injury doubts while Ethan Ampadu’s return to training may come too soon to feature on Wednesday. As a result, Callum Hudson-Odoi could be trusted with a start with Willian needing a rest after starting the past nine games in all competitions.

Meanwhile Derby will be boosted by the availability of Fikayo Tomori and Mason Mount for selection, but the latter could still miss out having picked up a minor foot injury against Middlesbrough at the weekend.

Predicted Chelsea XI: Caballero; Zappacosta, Christensen, Cahill, Emerson; Fabregas, Loftus-Cheek, Kovacic; Moses, Morata, Hudson-Odoi.

Predicted Derby County XI:  Carson; Bogle, Tomori, Keogh, Forsyth; Wilson, Huddlestone; Waghorn, Mount, Lawrence; Nugent.

1. Chelsea to win and both teams to score @ 17/10

Chelsea are heavy favourites to beat Derby in 90 minutes on Wednesday, but the best bet could be for the Blues to go through while also conceding.

In 14 games across all competitions so far this season, Chelsea have conceded 11 goals including one against BATE Borisov in the Europa League – their most recent home match.

And it is this game from which Derby can gain confidence, with the Blues switching off defensively at times.

Key Stat: Chelsea have conceded three goals in their past three matches across all competitions.

2. Ruben Loftus-Cheek to score anytime @ 8/5

Ruben Loftus-Cheek is currently enjoying the best goalscoring spell of his career, netting in two consecutive games for the first time.

Furthermore, the English midfielder has managed four goals in those two games, including a hat-trick against BATE at Stamford Bridge last week.

With rotation likely, Loftus-Cheek will be one of the favourites to start for Chelsea and could yet again find the net.

Key Stat: Ruben Loftus-Cheek has scored twice as many goals in his past two games than he did in his first 35 for Chelsea.

3. Over 3.5 goals @ 13/10

The last time these two sides met, Chelsea emerged victorious with a 3-1 win at Pride Park in the League Cup in 2014.

You’d have to go back to 2008 to find the last time the pair faced off at Stamford Bridge, a Premier League fixture. Chelsea won 6-1 on that occasion as the Rams were on they way back down to the Championship.

Interestingly, currently Derby manager Lampard scored four goals that day, but will be hoping for less of the same come Wednesday – though goals are a guarantee.

Key Stat: Chelsea (31) and Derby (30) have combined to score 61 goals in all competitions this season.
