Mourinho compares Lukaku goal drought to a bottle of ketchup

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has likened Romelu Lukaku‘s current goal drought to a bottle of ketchup, a metaphor once used by Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Belgian striker has found goals hard to come by this season, netting just four in 13 appearances across all competitions, with all of those coming in the Premier League.

At present, the 25-year-old has failed to find the back of the net in his last eight matches and has not scored at Old Trafford since the back end of March.

Despite this, Mourinho believes Lukaku’s barren run will come to an abrupt end soon, and with that, the goals should come flooding out – just like shaking a bottle of ketchup.

“I think one of the best scorers in football had funny words about it,” he told Sky Sports. “It was when Cristiano Ronaldo was speaking about the ketchup bottle and when you [shake it]. The goals are coming and coming and coming.

“I believe with Lukaku that this will happen, but the reality is that, in this moment, it’s not happening.

“There’s been lots of matches in which he’s not scored a goal, and not just scoring but also the performances, the happiness in the performances, I think is the problem.

“But he’s a good player, a good boy, and I think the best way to do it is to just keep working and the moment will arrive.”

Lukaku scored 27 goals in 51 matches for the Red Devils during his maiden campaign at Old Trafford, and his goals further helped guide Belgium to a third-place finish at the World Cup in the summer.

Man Utd have struggled for form this season, currently sitting tenth in the Premier League, firing consecutive blanks in the Champions League, and have been knocked out of the EFL Cup by Derby County.

“Everton have one advantage”

Mourinho acknowledged the strengths of Everton as his side will clash with the club on Sunday, believing Marco Silva’s men have less pressure to deal with.

“Everton have one advantage in relation to us, which is a similar potential, but much less expectations,” Mourinho added.

“Everything they do nicely is positive, the mood has been calm during their investments.

“They’ve improved their team, they’ve had time to work, no pressure at all, and the potential is very similar.

“We have on us that extra factor that we are Manchester United, but we have to be strong enough and brave enough to know that it’s a game that we can win.”
