Manchester United goalkeeper David ge Gea insists his sole focus remains on performing well for the club rather than on contracts with the Spaniard yet to sign a new deal.
The 27-year-old will see his present deal at Old Trafford expire at the end of the season, though the club have an option to extend his stay until 2020.
However, manager Jose Mourinho has already revealed he is “not confident” the Spanish goalkeeper will put pen to paper on new contract in North West England.
De Gea has long been linked with a move back to his homeland and Real Madrid were believed to have been huge admirers of the shot-stopper, however, the recruitment of Thibaut Courtois in the summer has all but ended that possible transfer.
That has not stopped the rumour mill linking United’s current No. 1 with a move away from the club though, with Juventus reportedly lining up a swoop, but De Gea insists he is happy at Old Trafford and his focus will remain on performing well for the club.
“What matters is the team and all of us being focused on what we need to focus on, which is winning games, rather than contracts or any topics that can be a distraction. What matters is focusing on football,” he told Sky Sports.
“We have an important game against Everton and we have some big fixtures over the coming months. I think that’s what matters, rather than thinking about anything else.
“I’ve been here for many seasons, as we’ve said. I’ve been at the club for eight seasons now. I’m very happy here. I always feel that warmth from the fans and everyone who works at the club.
“I think it’s very easy to be focused on what you have to focus on, partly because we have lots of training sessions and play every three or four days.
“You have to be focused on what’s important, which is the team, winning, doing well in training and being in good shape to give your all.
“You don’t have time to think about things that aren’t as important as football and the points that are at stake in the games that we have to win and do well in.”
The Red Devils continued their slowly-improving league form on Sunday, beating Everton 2-1 courtesy of goals from Paul Pogba and Anthony Martial, and they will next turn their attention to an away trip against Bournemouth on Saturday.
Victory for Jose Mourinho’s men puts the club eighth in the Premier League on 17 points, climbing above Everton and just five points off Arsenal in fourth, with the Gunners dropping points at Crystal Palace.
