Anthony Martial labelled Man Utd’s most ‘confusing’ player of the last decade

Former Manchester United star Gary Neville says Anthony Martial ‘drives him crazy’ with his performances for Manchester United and claims the winger is one of the most confusing United players he has watched.

The Frenchman has impressed for United in recent weeks, scoring an important double in United’s 2-2 draw with Chelsea and netting again in their win against Everton on Sunday.

There were suggestions that Martial may have looked to seek a move away from Old Trafford in the summer, but that failed to come to fruition and he may now be set for a crucial season at United, with negotiations over a new contract ongoing.

Speaking on Sky Sports on Monday night, United legend Neville has explained his frustration at Martial’s inconsistency and has criticised him for his lack of defensive work off the ball.

“There’s never been a player over the last ten years at Manchester United that I have been confused by as much (as Martial). I cannot make my mind up,” Neville said.

“Sometimes I think he is brilliant and other weeks I think that I am not sure he is a Manchester United player.

“What drives me crazy about him is his off-the-ball work. He doesn’t know where to be and where to run at the right times.”

Neville has suggested that Martial needs to work harder and make more incisive runs if he is to become one of the most impressive attacking players in the Premier League.

“He’s either a five or a nine and what you want is a seven or eight with the odd nine.

“I looked at the physical stats of Martial and the other players like Mane and Salah and again, I got the shock of my life. I thought that’s why Deschamps, Mourinho and others don’t fancy you.

“Look at the players in and around him. Mane runs almost 2km more. Hazard – who gets accused of not working hard – runs 1.5km more than Martial. Martial is well down on his physical stuff.

“This is not about defensive work but about making those runs.”

Martial doesn’t know how good he is

The form of Martial has been a hot topic in recent weeks, with many at the club hoping that the winger can show his potential on a more regular basis.

His United teammate Nemanja Matic believes Martial is a lot more talented than he thinks he is.

“Anthony is a great player and he needs to understand that,” he said. “He needs more confidence.

“He is still young and I think if he continues to score in the next games he will get that.

“If he reaches his top level he can be one of the best players in the league for sure. Sometimes I don’t think he understands how good he is.”

United’s next match will see them take on Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.
