Wayne Rooney turned down luxury perks to avoid mistakes of other “big players” in MLS

Former Manchester United and England striker Wayne Rooney has revealed that he’s turned down a number of luxuries since his arrival at D.C. United with the aim of ingratiating himself with his teammates.

Rooney made the move to the MLS in June and his arrival in Washington has been a huge success story so far.

United were bottom of the league table when Rooney arrived, but the striker’s form helped his side to secure a play-off spot earlier this week, in one of the most incredible turnarounds in MLS history.

Speaking on the TV show ‘Men In Blazers’, Rooney revealed that he has rejected a number of luxuries since his arrival in Washington so that he feels part of the team.

“If you are going to be part of the team, you have to be part of the team,” Rooney said.

“All in and do the same things. I don’t want special treatment — I wanted to be treated the same as the players. I’m part of this team.

“It’s not rocket science — if you can go and form relationships with the players and speak to them.

“I know a lot of players who come here — big players in other countries — they haven’t attempted to form those relationships or to buy in to what the team are doing. I think it is important. You do that, and you can have a big impact on the team.”

Wayne Rooney’s DC United impact explained

So far, Rooney has an impressive 12 goals and nine assists in just 19 appearances for United, making him the top scorer in the MLS since he made the move to America.

The former Three Lions captain turned 33 earlier this week but is still producing the goods on the pitch.

Before his arrival at the club, United had won just two matches of their opening 14 fixtures. They got back to winning ways on Rooney’s debut, with a 3-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps in July.

Since then, Rooney’s side have go onto win 12 of their last 19 fixtures.

D.C. United will play their final match of the regular season against Chicago Fire on Sunday, before they begin their MLS Cup play-off next week.
