Pep Guardiola rules out joining a Premier League rival: “Mancunian for the rest of my life”

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has admitted he will not be able to manage another team in England if he were to leave the club.

Guardiola took charge of City in 2016 and led them to a Premier League and Carabao Cup double last season, breaking records along the way.

City are unbeaten in the Premier League at the start of the current season after nine games and could return to the top of the table with a win over Tottenham Hotspur on Monday.

And, when talking about his future and potential life after City, Guardiola admitted he will steer clear of staying in England out of love for the club.

“I will be Mancunian for the rest of my life,” he told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“So I will be a Manchester City fan, it will not be possible to train another team in England like Manchester City.

“Because I feel the love from the people here, you know I like to do it better, to seduce them, to make a better club than you can believe that we are strong enough to do better things, but it is what it is.”

Guardiola has already managed in La Liga and Bundesliga for Barcelona and Bayern Munich, and has garnered a reputation from turning good teams into greats.

At Barcelona, the Spaniard oversaw three La Liga wins, two Copa del Reys as well as two Champions League victories before winning the Bundesliga three times and DFB-Pokal twice with Bayern Munich.

Guardiola’s Manchester City reign so far

Announced as the incoming Manchester City manager midway through the 2015/16 season, Guardiola officially took charge in July 2016.

His first year in charge would ultimately be a disappointment, failing to win a single trophy, finishing third in the Premier League but losing in the fourth round of the League Cup, semi-finals of the FA Cup and reaching Champions League last-16.

The next, however, was a lot better as they won the Premier League with a record 100 points, 32 wins and 106 goals to add to the Carabao Cup. Though disappointment came in a Champions League quarter-final defeat to Liverpool and FA Cup fifth-round exit at the hands of League One side Wigan Athletic.
