Sky Sports pundit Graeme Souness has blasted Everton forward Theo Walcott for costing his side two goals in their 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford on Sunday.
Manchester United created a host of chances on Sunday afternoon with most of them coming down the left flank via Luke Shaw and, especially, Anthony Martial who was unlucky not to bag another brace.
Walcott looked almost inert at times during the game, he didn’t appear to make a concerted effort to run through the channels during Everton’s advances and provided little cover for Seamus Coleman in defence.
Both of United’s goals materialised from the left flank. Martial won a penalty in the first half when he lost Walcott and Coleman on the left wing. After the break the Frenchman managed to cut inside to meet Pogba’s lay off without a marker in sight to curl the ball home from range.
And Souness believes Walcott was at fault for both of United’s goals, implying it might be time to “give up” on the player due to his advancing years.
“Theo Walcott is 29 years old; when do you give up with players? At 29,” Souness said on Sky Sports.
Referring to Walcott’s attitude after the first goal Souness said: “That should be: ‘I made a mistake for the first penalty, I’m definitely not going to make a mistake a second time and I sprint back at every opportunity’.
“He’s cost his team two goals.”
Martial’s goal was Man Utd’s 100th goal against Everton, making them only the second club to score 100+ goals against a single side in the Premier League.
The Red Devils head to the south coast next Saturday to face Bournemouth in the Premier League, the following Tuesday they head to Turin for a crucial clash in the Champions League against Juventus where they will hope to avenge last week’s 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
