Henderson or Dier? Now everyone knows who’s better, says ex-England boss Stuart Pearce

Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has proven himself to be better than England team-mate Eric Dier, according to Stuart Pearce.

Both Henderson and Dier battled for a place in England’s starting line-up during the World Cup with the Liverpool man getting the nod at the heart of the midfield.

Henderson started all-but two of England’s games at the World Cup, missing only the matches against Belgium – Dier’s only two starts.

And former England international Pearce believes Henderson proved himself the better of the two after the World Cup.

“From a choice between Henderson or Dier, after the World Cup everyone knows who by far is the best one,” he told Sky Sports’ The Debate.

“Henderson offers leadership as well, as captain of Liverpool.”

The pair used to start together for England as the Three Lions fought for qualification to the World Cup but many fans often slated the option, with some feeling it is far too negative a pairing.

However, both did start for England in their Uefa Nations League game against Croatia on Friday evening, as Gareth Southgate opted for a new formation, moving away from the 3-5-2 he used in Russia and deploying a 4-3-3.

The Liverpool midfielder was the more advanced of the two as Dier sat at the base with Henderson to his right and Chelsea’s Ross Barkley on his left.

Compared: Henderson vs Dier this season

Playing a key role for England in the summer, Henderson has been slightly less busy for Liverpool in the Premier League this season, with four starts and four substitute appearances.

In contrast, Dier has started seven times for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League so far, missing just one game.

Despite his lack of playing time, Henderson has had more effect on his side than Dier per 90. The Liverpool man has averaged 65.36 passes per 90 compared to Dier’s 48.48.

Henderson has also averaged more successful tackles than Dier at 2.04 to 1.09 per 90, though the Tottenham midfielder has, perhaps surprisingly, been slightly more creative.
