Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has urged the club’s attacking trident to be more prolific in the final third.
The former midfield enforcer has been particularly critical of the club this season, previously branding his ex-side a “mess” under the guidance of Jose Mourinho.
And now he has made a scathing assessment of the Red Devils front three, believing Romelu Lukuku, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are failing to reach the heights of their potential.
According to Scholes, Man Utd should be expecting between 60 and 65 from the front three, however, Mourinho has been unable to mould a side capable of firing on all cylinders on a consistent basis.
The club fired a blank against Juventus on Tuesday night in the Champions League, which would not have gone down too well with Scholes.
“The players are there, the talent is there,” he said before the game, as cited by Goal.
“We talk about the front three all the time, think about the pace and the strength.

“Okay, Lukaku’s probably struggling for a bit of confidence, Marcus is probably struggling for a bit of confidence. But you look at those three and you must be thinking 60-65 goals a season. They need to start producing that now.
“We speak about Martial and Rashford being players of potential for the future but they’ve played over 100 games. The future is no good anymore, it needs to be now.”
“What he has to do is go back to attacking football”
When questioned on how the Red Devils can start to make improvements under Mourinho, Scholes urged the Portuguese tactician to start playing more attacking football, a criticism Mourinho has long faced during his career.
However, the former midfielder also believes the club’s problems run deeper than just a lack of potency in the final third, believing Saturday’s draw with Chelsea highlighted fragilities in defence as well.
He added: “What he has to do is go back to attacking football, playing his best attacking players.
“I think he did that on Saturday [against Chelsea], he took a risk because he knows defensively they aren’t good enough.
“The personnel hasn’t changed from last season – they still conceded chances last season and the keeper was magnificent, he made three or four world class save every game and we aren’t seeing that this season. He’s still a world-class keeper but he can’t do that all the time.”
Man Utd currently sit 10th in the Premier League having conceded 16 goals, and also have a minus-one goal difference.
Having lost to Juve on Tuesday, United next face Everton on Sunday.
