Arsenal star sends message to fans after injury set back

Arsenal full-back Hector Bellerin has sent a message out on social media following his season-ending injury suffered against Chelsea at the weekend.

The Spaniard went down in what looked to be an innocuous off-the-ball incident in the 72nd minute at the Emirates but immediately called for the physio. Following scans it has been revealed the defender will be out for between six to nine months after rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament.

How big a miss will Bellerin be? Four key things you should know…

  1. Bellerin has played 19 times in the Premier League this season for the Gunners.
  2. The Spaniard has been key to Unai Emery’s style, marauding forward down the right.
  3. Arsenal have Stephan Lichtsteiner and Ainsley Maitland-Niles they could call upon as a replacement.
  4. Bellerin is expected to be out for up to nine months after rupturing his ACL against Chelsea.

The Gunners beat Chelsea 2-0 at the Emirates to close the gap on the top four to just three points leaving Maurizio Sarri questioning the motivation of his players.

Bellerin had just got back from an injury to his calf that had seen him make his first start since mid-December.

It was tough for the Spaniard to then be stretchered off in his first game back but the defender appears to in better spirits and admitted he was feeling more positive after two days to reflect.

“There are no obstacles in life you can’t get over,” Bellerin wrote on Twitter.

“Been a difficult couple of days but I’m positive and ready to take whatever challenge comes my way. Thank you so much for the love and messages, you are incredible.”

The right-back has put in an average of 0.5 crosses per 90 minutes in the Premier League this season for the Gunners and will be a big miss.

The club are hoping to get him back as soon as possible and released the following statement on the official website to update the supporters: “Further to the injury sustained during our match against Chelsea on Saturday, we can confirm that Hector has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee.

“Hector will undergo surgery to repair this in the coming days. The rehabilitation process is expected to take between six to nine months and therefore rules Hector out of action for the remainder of this season.

“Everyone at the club will now be working as hard as we can to ensure Hector is back on the pitch as soon as possible next season.”

Who could replace Bellerin for Arsenal?

Unai Emery will be ruing the injury to the Spaniard but will already be planning on who can come in to replace him for the next game against Cardiff City.

The most obvious option would be to draft in Stephan Lichtsteiner. The experienced Swiss defender has only played nine times in the Premier League this season but would be a good short-term option.

There is also the possibility that the Gunners could raid the loan market to bring in a defender but with the wage bill already stretched there may be other priorities before that is considered.
