Antonio Conte responds to Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos’ “respect” warning

Antonio Conte has responded to Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos’ claims that a new manager for Los Blancos would need to earn the respect of the club’s players.

The Italian has been without a job since leaving Chelsea in the summer due to a falling out with the club’s board, despite leading the Blues to a Premier League title and an FA Cup during his two year spell at the club.

Conte had been linked with the vacant managers job at Real Madrid following Julen Lopetegui’s departure last month, but would ultimately miss out, with Santiago Solari being named interim head coach.

Speaking around the time of the initial Conte link, Ramos told reporters, via Marca: “Respect is won, it’s not imposed. We’ve won titles, and team management is more important than the knowledge of a coach.”

And now, Conte has given his opinion on respect in football, claiming players and coaches need to bring mutual respect.

“Ramos’ words? When a coach arrives at a team he must bring education and respect, something that he would expect from the players too,” he told Rai Sport, as reported by Marca.

“When this goes wrong, the problems begin.

“We Italian coaches have a great culture of work and when you join a new club you can’t change everything, you must try and do it very gradually.

“Each coach must be a good tailor and adapt their beliefs to the human material that they have at their disposal.”

Conte then went on to confirm that he will wait until the end of the season to find a new job and won’t rush into a new role.

“For a coach of my level it’s better to wait until June and not take a train to my career,” he added.

“I will wait until next season.”

Since sacking Lopetegui, Real Madrid have had an upturn in form, winning their four games across all competitions since then, including two in La Liga to close the gap on leaders Barcelona to four points.

Solari is now expected to be appointed as permanent head coach in the near future.

Antonio Conte’s managerial career so far

A former Italy international footballer, Conte started his managerial career with Italian third tier side Arezzo in 2006 – a team with whom he had two spells before taking charge of Bari in late 2007.

Bari brought the first trophy of Conte’s managerial career, winning the Serie B title in 2009, though he would leave for Atalanta shortly after.

A brief, unsuccessful spell came at Atalanta before Conte spent a year in Siena and finally got his dream Juventus move in 2011.

Conte spent three years as Juventus manager, winning three consecutive Serie A titles and went on to become the Italian national team manager.

After two years with the Azzurri, Conte took charge of Chelsea in 2016, winning the Premier League in his debut campaign before adding the FA Cup last summer.
