Cardiff issue Sala statement as authorities confirm striker was on board missing flight

Cardiff City have announced that the club is continuing to “pray for positive news” after it was confirmed striker Emiliano Sala was a passenger on an aircraft that went missing on Monday.

Sala, 28, was confirmed by the French Civil Aviation Authority on Tuesday as one of two people on board a plane that vanished over the Channel Islands.

The Argentinian became Cardiff’s record signing when he completed his move from French club Nantes over the weekend.

According to BBC News, the plane disappeared from radar at 2,300ft, provoking search efforts that are ongoing.

Cardiff have now commented on the news via a statement on their official website from Executive Director & CEO Ken Cho.

The statement read: “We were very shocked upon hearing the news that the plane had gone missing. We expected Emiliano to arrive last night into Cardiff and today was due to be his first day with the team.

“Our owner, Tan Sri Vincent Tan, and chairman, Mehmet Dalman, are all very distressed about the situation.

“We made the decision first thing this morning to call off training with the thoughts of the squad, management staff and the entire Club with Emiliano and the pilot.

“All of us at Cardiff City FC would like to thank our fans, and the entire footballing family for their support at this difficult time. We continue to pray for positive news.”

Cardiff’s statement came after the French Civil Aviation Authority’s confirmation that Sala was on board the plane.

A spokesperson said: “We can confirm Emiliano Sala was on board.

“This morning, the French research started with one French national navy ship and one aircraft. The investigation will determined which authority will take the lead on the research.”

Sala spent four years at Nantes before making the move to Cardiff.
